Wise men say it’s worth crossing many rivers to catch UB40 live in concert. The Birmingham (UK) reggae band are gracing the US on their global Unstoppable tour. It was Thousand Oaks’ lucky turn to be treated to UB40 as they stopped here. The 11-piece ambassadors of reggae proved how relevant and rockin’ they still are, since forming 45 years ago.
Prolific and profound in their recordings, UB40 unfolded an evening of classic hits, including “Red, Red Wine” (and covers that have their signature melodic twist); “One in Ten” and another personal fave, “Food for Thought” and many other instantly recognizable numbers. Number 1’s including “I Can’t Help (Falling In Love With You)” and material from their latest great album “UB 45.”
I’ve always thought it both creative and clever how the band named themselves after the UK unemployment form. Pointed and gutsy. Like their raw and distinctive sound.
Discovered by Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, UB40 collaborated with her on “I Got You Babe” and went on to sell millions of records and tour the globe.
Impeccable in their sound, the remarkably resilient band doesn’t slow down. A tonic. And triumph.
Next up, UB40 play a gig at the House of Blues, Anaheim, October 28.
Hardcore UB40 fans filled the Fred Kavli theater this autumn evening as the band delivered a tried and true solid playlist.
Reggae may be UB40’s groove but their sound crosses and syncs creatively and effortlessly with pop, jazz and rock.
Their energy is infectious on record, but in concert, it is electric! The band has a new album set to be released later this year.
