Congresswoman Waters, known for her unwavering advocacy for marginalized communities, was among the distinguished honorees. Her recognition at this event adds to a series of accolades acknowledging her lifelong commitment to public service and social justice. In December 2023, she received the Movement Builder Award at the 25th Anniversary Gala of “A New Way of Life,” an organization dedicated to supporting formerly incarcerated women. The award was presented by founder Susan Burton, who praised Waters for her steadfast dedication to empowering women and communities affected by the criminal justice system.

Additionally, Waters was honored at the “Power, Leadership, and Influence of the Black Woman” event, where she received the Johnnie Tillmon Award for her legislative leadership and advocacy for Black Americans. The award was presented by the family of Johnnie Tillmon, a pioneering activist.

The Turning Point Luncheon also recognized other community leaders, including award-winning actor and educator Akuyoe Graham and State Assemblymember Mike Gipson. Their contributions to social justice and community empowerment were celebrated, highlighting the event’s mission to honor those who inspire change and uplift others.

The Turning Point AOD organization, which hosted the luncheon, is dedicated to supporting individuals on their journey of reentry and reunification after incarceration. Through events like this, they aim to raise awareness, foster community support, and provide resources to help individuals rebuild their lives and create lasting positive change.

Actor and filmmaker Mario Van Peebles made a notable appearance at a high-profile event hosted by Rep. Maxine Waters in Los Angeles. His presence highlighted the importance of representation and empowerment in the entertainment industry and beyond. The event celebrated the resilience and achievements of Black women, with Van Peebles contributing a powerful voice to the occasion.
