Los Angeles, (The Hollywood Times) 5/30/25 – If you were captivated by the innovative puppetry of War Horse, then Life of Pi offers a similarly unforgettable theatrical experience. This Tony Award-winning Broadway production, now on its national tour, presents a compelling blend of emotional storytelling and visual wonder — and tonight, June 1st, is your last chance to see it at the Ahmanson Theatre.

The use of life-sized animal puppets in the production is nothing short of extraordinary. Richard Parker (the Bengal tiger), Orange Juice (the orangutan), the heartless spotted hyena, and Black& White (the zebra) are brought to life by a remarkably talented team of actors and puppeteers. Through their meticulous movements and lifelike expressiveness, these creatures transform into fully realized characters with unique personalities and emotional depth. As an audience member, you’ll form a genuine connection with them.
At the heart of it all is Taha Mandviwala in the title role of Pi. His performance is moving and impressively grounded. He maintains a presence in every scene during this two-plus-hour production, carrying the story with emotional weight and energy from start to finish. Equally noteworthy are the production’s technical accomplishments. The set design, lighting, and projections create a fluid, dreamlike oceanic world. Waves rise and fall, storms rage, and moments of sea life evoke both beauty and danger. With its enchanting puppetry, stunning design, and heartfelt performances, Life of Pi transcends more than a play—it’s a theatrical, visual journey that lingers with you long after the curtain falls.

Final performance: June 1st at the Ahmanson Theatre.
