Hollywood, CA (The Hollywood Times) 7/22/26 – Following its world premiere at the Palm Springs International ShortFest, writer-director Zichen Zhao’s The Kalgan Horse will make its Los Angeles premiere at the 2026 HollyShorts Film Festival.
Set along the farming and herding borderlands of northern China, the film follows a 10-year-old boy determined to protect a Mongolian horse awaiting castration. What begins as a child’s effort to save an animal develops into a sobering confrontation with violence, power, and the cruelty of the adult world.
Zhao approaches the story through the boy’s youthful perspective, giving the film an emotional sensitivity that makes its harsher moments especially affecting. The horse becomes more than an animal in danger, it represents innocence, freedom, and the boy’s awakening realization that compassion is not always enough to stop brutality.
