Palm Springs, CA (The Hollywood Times) 5/31/26 – As a proud media partner, The Hollywood Times was honored to spotlight one of the most anticipated events of 2026 as Palm Springs celebrated the life, legacy, and enduring influence of Marilyn Monroe during a spectacular centennial celebration held May 29 through June 1.

Nearly 100 years after her birth, Monroe remains one of the most recognizable and beloved figures in entertainment history. To commemorate the milestone, Palm Springs transformed into a living tribute to the Hollywood icon with a weekend filled with film, fashion, art, music, community celebrations, and a historic Guinness World Record attempt.

One of the signature events of the weekend was the Marilyn Monroe 100th Birthday Record-Breaking Celebration, which took place on Saturday, May 30, in Downtown Palm Springs around the iconic Forever Marilyn statue.

Palm Springs wasn’t simply throwing a birthday party; it was attempting to earn a Guinness World Record title for the largest gathering of Marilyn Monroe look-alikes ever assembled. Organizers hoped to fill downtown with a sea of platinum blonde wigs, white halter dresses, red lipstick, and Marilyn-inspired glamour.

The celebration ran from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., featuring live entertainment, food vendors, beverage activations, celebrity appearances, music, and community festivities.

The highlight took place from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., when officials conducted the formal certification process. Timed to coincide with Palm Springs’ famous golden hour, the gathering created one of the most memorable photo opportunities of the year, with photographers and drone crews documenting the historic moment.

Guests raised glasses of champagne and mocktails in a celebratory toast honoring the woman whose image remains one of the most enduring in popular culture.

All ages were welcome, and organizers emphasized that the event was designed to be inclusive and accessible to everyone.

Participants who registered for the official record attempt received a special Marilyn “Icon Kit,” which included a signature white Marilyn-inspired dress, platinum blonde wig, Visit Palm Springs cat-eye sunglasses, and a commemorative martini glass.

Among those helping coordinate the ambitious undertaking was Palm Springs community leader Ron deHarte, who discussed some of the unique challenges involved in organizing an official world record attempt.

“When folks arrive, they’ll scan their QR code, and that tells people that they’re here and physically present,” deHarte explained. “You can see they’re using technology.”

Just days before the event, organizers learned that Guinness World Records would not be sending an adjudicator from North America, forcing the team to quickly revise its certification plans.

“Their representative told us a couple of days ago they weren’t able to get an adjudicator on the North American side to come,” said deHarte. “We had to scramble and change everything we were doing just to be able to get the certification.”

Instead of relying on an on-site adjudicator, organizers assembled an extensive verification process requiring attendance records, photographs, video documentation, and testimony from 13 independent witnesses.

“We need 13 witnesses,” deHarte noted.

Despite the unexpected hurdles, deHarte remained confident that Palm Springs would make history.

“This is the first trial,” he said before the official count. “No matter what, we’re going to set a record.”

What began as an ambitious attempt to honor Marilyn Monroe’s centennial year became a record-breaking triumph for Palm Springs.

Thousands gathered around the iconic Forever Marilyn statue as part of the city’s Marilyn 100 celebration, and in the process shattered the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Marilyn Monroe.

The previous record stood at 254 participants, established by the Marilyn Jetty Swim Team in Brighton, Australia, on February 2, 2020. Organizers initially hoped to attract at least 500 Marilyn look-alikes, but attendance far exceeded expectations.

According to organizers, an official count recorded 1,037 participants dressed as Monroe, more than quadrupling the previous record and securing Palm Springs a place in Guinness World Records history.

Hosted by Greater Palm Springs Pride, the celebration transformed downtown into a sea of platinum blonde wigs, white halter dresses inspired by Monroe’s iconic look from The Seven-Year Itch, cat-eye sunglasses, and celebratory martinis and mocktails. Participants from across the country gathered to honor what would have been the screen legend’s 100th birthday on June 1.

What started as a world record attempt evolved into one of the most memorable moments in recent Palm Springs history, with more than a thousand “Marilyns” filling the streets in a joyful tribute to one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons.

As Palm Springs celebrated Monroe’s beauty, talent, charisma, and cultural influence, the city also secured its own place in the record books with a centennial tribute worthy of a Hollywood legend.

Beyond the record-setting event, the entire weekend offered visitors countless opportunities to immerse themselves in Marilyn’s glamorous world.

Among the featured events were:

  • Still Luminous at Illumine Gallery, celebrating Monroe’s artistic and cultural influence.
  • I Heart Drag Brunch: Marilyn’s 100th Celebration at Hyatt Palm Springs.
  • Marilyn 100: A Centennial Film Celebration at the historic Palm Springs Plaza Theatre.
  • Marilyn Monroe’s 100th Birthday Drag Brunch at The Saguaro Palm Springs.
  • A special screening of the classic comedy Some Like It Hot at the Palm Springs Cultural Center.
  • Marilyn Take Over at Hunters Palm Springs.
  • Gentlemen Prefer Streetbar at Streetbar, inspired by one of Monroe’s most beloved films.

Visitors also enjoyed the many attractions that have long made Palm Springs one of Monroe’s favorite desert escapes. From poolside relaxation and world-class dining to hiking adventures and nightlife, the city provided a fitting backdrop for a celebration of a woman who helped define Hollywood glamour.

According to organizers, the centennial celebration was about more than recreating Marilyn’s iconic look. It was an opportunity to reflect on her cultural impact, her influence on generations of performers, and the timeless appeal that continues to make her a global symbol of beauty, charisma, and resilience.

Whether attending a film screening, enjoying a themed brunch, exploring an art exhibition, or taking part in the world record attempt itself, guests had the opportunity to honor one of cinema’s most enduring legends while helping create a memorable chapter in Palm Springs history.

For Marilyn Monroe fans, Hollywood enthusiasts, and visitors from around the globe, the centennial celebration delivered a once-in-a-lifetime experience worthy of the woman who remains forever synonymous with stardom.

Diamonds may be forever, but Marilyn Monroe’s legacy shines even brighter.
