Jimmy’s ornate gate

La Quinta, California (The Hollywood Times) 10/07/2023 – It was a beautiful day in sunny and breezy La Quinta when we got to Jimmy Steinfeldt’s studio.  There was a awesome ornate gate that leads to his outside foyer. That is where we found the doorbell, so we pushed it and waited for Jimmy to open it up.

It was great to see Jimmy, who also writes for us at The Hollywood Times.  We have included a full length video interview, showcasing Jimmy’s amazing photos that he has on display for his upcoming exhibition on Saturday, October 28th.

Once we were welcomed in, Jimmy talked to us about all the photos he has on the walls of his new beautiful studio that will be for sale at his event.  Jimmy prepared delightful tea for the two of us. He gave us a tour of the outside and it was stunning out there, with views of the mountain, greenery, lovely and inviting pool with spa and even a firepit.

Jimmy shared with us that he is now designing shirts to be sold to his rock and roll friends and what an amazing shirt it is.  I truly love polka dots.  Can’t wait to see the next design of his.  Here is another photo of Jimmy’s new shirt line:

We also spent some time in Jimmy’s office, which he designed himself and we have to say he did an amazing job.  He has many photos he shot on the walls, catalogs of slides, which were awesome to see up close, many books and collectibles and even his MAC collection of vintage PCs and cellphones.  Way cool Jimmy!  Jimmy was kind enough to give me two color photos of Little Richard, whose sister such happens to be a friend of mine for over 30 years now. She is going to love getting that photo in the mail. Thanks a million Jimmy.

If that was not generous enough, he even gave Tina and me an autographed copy of his first book Rock ‘N’ Roll Lens, WOW that was really awesome and we have it in the video below as well.

Here is our YouTube video interview that was shot by my friend Tina Kavanaugh.

Enjoy our time spent with Jimmy at his studio:

Here is a photo collage of Don Rickles and Bob Newhart that he shot over in Las Vegas.

I really like this photo of Al Pacino that Jimmy shot. Look at how Al is looking right at Jimmy.

APOLLONIA INVITES YOU TO A RECEPTION AND EXHIBITION OF THE ACCLAIMED ROCK PHOTOGRAPHER’S WORK AT HIS LA QUINTA ATELIER

Jimmy Steinfeldt and Apollonia

Apollonia, female lead in the film Purple Rain and front woman of Prince-produced group Apollonia 6 (“Sex Shooter”), invites you to spend some time with noted music photographer Jimmy Steinfeldt and his work at his new studio on Saturday, October 28. Steinfeldt is celebrating his move to the Coachella Valley with a gathering at his new digs in La Quinta Cove from 4 to 7 PM that evening.

The event includes an exhibition and sale of original prints of some of his most notable works, including exclusive shots of Prince, Apollonia, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Elton John, Sheryl Crow, David Bowie, ZZ Top, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, Willie Nelson, and many more.

Originally from Minneapolis, where he met Apollonia (who had moved to the Twin Cities from Southern California for the filming of Purple Rain), Steinfeldt witnessed and documented the rise of Prince first-hand. He has gone on to become one of the most celebrated music photographers of the past forty years. No less a light than veteran photographer/designer Glen Wexler has said, “Jimmy Steinfeldt is truly the man on the scene. In an industry with limited access, Jimmy has All Access. He’s everywhere, and this doesn’t happen by accident. The trust he instills in his subjects has allowed him to photograph virtually every rock icon, amassing a staggering body of work contributing to more than four decades of music history.”

Jimmy Steinfeldt book

Two books of Steinfeldt’s work – 2012’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Lens and Rock ‘N’ Roll Lens II, that was published in 2017 – will be available at the event, as will signed and framed limited edition digital C prints of his work, printed on high quality matte paper in sizes from 11×14 to 20×30.

The first 25 guests to attend will be gifted with a choice of a first generation print of a number of subjects, including Alice Cooper, Neil Young, Iggy Pop, Keith Richards, Tina Turner, Green Day, Whitney Houston, and Aerosmith.

Steinfeldt’s studio has been transformed into a photo gallery for the evening that will include refreshments and music, courtesy of Revel Sprits Agave.

Over the course of his lengthy career, Steinfeldt has worked with everyone from Miles Davis to the Ramones, and many, many more. His singular photographic style conveys the personality of his artist-musician subjects while imparting the story of their music. As a live action photographer, Steinfeldt’s work was first published in SPIN Magazine; thereafter Rolling Stone ran one of his shots of Madonna, which he credits as a major boost to his career. Rolling Stone then ran a photo he shot of Bob Dylan, leading to album cover work for Miles Davis, Willie Nelson, John Denver, Dee Dee Ramone, and many others thereafter. He was recognized in 2007 as Photographer of the Year at the Los Angeles Music Awards.

As one pundit put it, “Jimmy Steinfeldt has a great eye; in fact, he has two of them. One of the best rock photographers out there.”
