A Delightful Evening at Greystone Mansion: Jane Austen in 89 Minutes

The Hollywood Times, Los Angeles, CA (2025)

On Wednesday, January 29th, I had the pleasure of attending the premiere of Jane Austen in 89 Minutes at the stunning and historic Greystone Mansion. Having never stepped foot inside this architectural gem before, I wasn’t sure what to expect—but as soon as I arrived, it became clear that this was the perfect setting for such a play. Built in 1928, the mansion’s grandeur and old-world charm provided an enchanting backdrop for an evening filled with wit, romance, and laughter.

The play takes on an ambitious challenge—condensing all six of Jane Austen’s beloved novels into just 89 minutes. And it succeeds brilliantly! With a sharp, fast-paced script, the story cleverly weaves Austen’s timeless tales together while incorporating witty narration from an actress playing Austen herself. Adding an extra layer of fun, the characters even poke fun at various film and TV adaptations, sharing playful commentary on the actors who have taken on these iconic roles over the years.

For Austen fans, this show is an absolute treat. If you’ve watched Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, or any of the countless adaptations, prepare to laugh out loud at the brilliant humor sprinkled throughout. The cast—Todd Andrew Ball, Alison Blanchard, Steven G. Frankenfield, Megan Deford, Branda Lock, Michael Mullen, and Holly Sidell—delivers a dynamic and hilarious performance, bringing Austen’s world to life in a fresh, modern way while still staying true to her wit and charm.

Written and directed by Syrie James and produced by David Hunt Stafford for Theatre 40, Jane Austen in 89 Minutes is running now through February 9th. Don’t miss the chance to experience this delightful, fast-paced comedy in one of the most breathtaking venues in Los Angeles!
