Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) – Apr 04, 2026
Boyle Heights came alive with culture, authenticity, and powerful storytelling as CASA 0101 Theater debuted its latest production of Real Women Have Curves, the signature award-winning play by Josefina López.
From the moment the show began, it was clear this was more than just a night at the theater—it was an immersive experience rooted in real stories, real struggles, and real women.
A Story Rooted in Reality
Set in a small sewing factory in East Los Angeles, Real Women Have Curves follows five Latina women working against the clock to meet an impossible production deadline while navigating the constant fear of immigration enforcement.
Through humor, vulnerability, and honest conversation—often filled with “chisme”—the women form an unbreakable bond that highlights their resilience, strength, and shared humanity.
What makes this story so impactful is its continued relevance. Decades after it was first written, its themes surrounding immigration, identity, body image, and gender roles still resonate deeply with audiences today.

Bringing the Story to Life
Directed by Corky Dominguez, the production strikes a seamless balance between humor and emotional depth, keeping the audience both entertained and introspective.
The cast—led by Stefany Arroyo, Yasha Alaniz, Bianca Araceli, Amy Melendrez, and Laura Vega—delivers powerful, authentic performances that feel both personal and relatable.
Each actress brings her own unique presence to the stage, yet together they create a dynamic ensemble that drives the story forward with intention and heart.

A Personal and Historic Element
One of the most meaningful aspects of this production is the inclusion of a real sewing machine that once belonged to López’s mother, Catalina Perales López—the inspiration behind the character of Carmen García.
This detail adds a deeply personal and emotional layer to the production, grounding the story in lived experience and honoring the legacy of the women who inspired it.
Culture, Community, and Connection
Experiencing this production in Boyle Heights adds another dimension entirely. The setting itself enhances the authenticity of the story, allowing audiences to fully connect with the cultural nuances and lived realities portrayed on stage.
For those unfamiliar with Chicano culture, the play offers a meaningful introduction. For others, it serves as a powerful reflection—one that celebrates identity, community, and womanhood.

Real Women Have Curves at CASA 0101 Theater is more than a performance—it’s a celebration of resilience, culture, and the power of women coming together.
