Why would dykes need their own day of LGBTQ rainbow fun in the sun…

Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 6/11/23 – Why would dykes need their own day of LGBTQ rainbow fun in the sun? We posed this question to the beautiful host, Kat Cunning, who identifies as non-binary. They said we are in fact a marginalized group that is systematically oppressed. By having this day we can connect in our spaces, organize, and make change for the better. We saw how gracious Kat was earlier in the week when we attended the Bitch concert on Thursday night at the Echo. Kat showing their commitment to inclusiveness helped a differently abled person in a wheelchair to the front row of the Bitch concert. Kat exudes confidence and glamor. We asked what’s in Kat’s future. They said telling stories through multiple mediums that feature music, acting, and writing.

This was the 15th year of Dyke Day. There were thousands of attendees. A mish mash of every dyke imaginable: young and old, Black, white, Brown, Hispanic, Asian, Bitch Femme, Trans, Daddy, Stud, Butch, differently abled people and many more. There were people promoting positive messages such as The Sisters of Indulgence offering make overs, Wombat Mental Health Services with a poster board in which attendees wrote on posties what mental health meant to them, and the person selling the ultimate lesbian card game. People celebrated with their chosen families, friends, and partners.

The After Dyke Party at the Akbar had more cisgender men than dykes. We left wishing for a better ending celebrating dykes. A New York Times article featuring the lesbian bar, Ruby Fruit, is where we wanted to end a dyke day of fun. There was no signage. It was tucked away in a strip mall next to a nail salon and Domino’s Pizza on Sunset Boulevard. Rubyfruit with modern art deco furniture and decor was welcoming, happening, and lit. The name took me back to my teenage years when I read Ruby Fruit Jungle by the lesbian author, Rita Mae Brown. Kat Cunning, the thousands at Dyke Day, and Ruby Fruit shows the lesbian nation is far from dead.
