Tuesdays with Morrie at Casa 0101 Theater, By Juan Markos
I was able to catch a performance of “Tuesdays with Morrie” last night, April 25th, at Casa 0101 Theater in Boyle Heights. I didn’t really research the play before watching it; I like to watch theater performances with no backstory or intel about what I’m going to experience. It’s written by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom and is based on the book by Mitch Albom. The play was directed by Miguel Angel Delgado, and it stars Vance Valencia as Morrie Schwartz and Gilbert Reynoso as Mitch Albom.
It’s based on Mitch Albom’s autobiographical story about an accomplished journalist and his former college professor who is battling Lou Gehrig’s disease. Mitch is reunited with Morrie, and what starts as a simple visit turns into a weekly class on life’s meaning. I had no idea what I was walking into. Still, I soon realized this story hit close to home for me; it’s about a journalist. We get to see some of his backstory and his relationship with death and how he atoned for his uncle—or didn’t. Morrie tells Mitch about his relationship with his mother before passing. How he handled the situation or didn’t, and how Mitch didn’t handle his uncle’s passing. Although a lot older, he was still too young to be present for his uncle or his kids. It’s a heartfelt story about atonement, grief, and friendship. The acting was phenomenal and truly brought to life all the emotions and intentions.
