TEN MINUTE THEATER FESTIVAL

Produced by Ruben Amavisca

By Odalys Nanin

ODALYS NANIN reviewer & TRICIA CRUZ writer of City of Rain

Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 1/19/25 – Ruben Amavisca a veteran producer and founder has for the past thirteen years produced the now famous Ten-Minute Theater Festival.  These are ten new plays written some by first time writers and others by professionals. The actors that participate in these short plays come from all different backgrounds and one Cultura; the Latinx experience is palpable and alive on the stage boards!   There is not one theme to the plays, but each play has its own unique voice.  It’s truly wonderful to see how some many artists come together to deliver a grand theatrical presentation.

1- I BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW by Irene Robles, directed by Jacqueline Guido This is a play where the lead is the writer and speaks in sign language.  We see her communicating with her grandmother by using a Video Sign Language Interpreter.  It’s difficult to follow but once you get the style it’s easier. The relationship between Irene and her grandmother played by Maria G Martinez is heartwarming.  Her grandmother never learned sign language to be able to communicate with her granddaughter.   The transformation takes place when the grandmother promises to Irene that she will learn it.

2-LA VINICIO by Waddys Jaquez performed by Josue Guerrero

This is a one man show in Spanish performed adaptly by Josue Guerrero with a Cuban accent to boot. He plays the character of La Vinicio, a charismatic, energetic, gay Cuban who’s delivery of such witty lines like; “Ser Pato no quiere decir  que soy Puta.” (Just cause, I’m gay doesn’t mean I’m a whore) & “Mi Tumbaito Tropical” (My gay walk) made everyone laugh.  Funny play good performance.

3-ABUELA’S FUNERAL by Teddy Alexis Rodriguez & Directed by Emanel Loarca

Who goes to a funeral to ditch on your dead grandma? Three estranged siblings must come together to arrange their grandmother’s funeral despite clashing personalities, deep-seated grudges, and conflicting feelings about their own Abuela.  This play is hysterically shocking it would have been more surprising if the Abuela rose from the dead!

Daniel Mora & Tricia Cruz backstage
Tricia Cruz as Divina & Daniel Mora As El Rey Rey in “City of Rain”

4-CITY OF RAIN by Tricia Cruz directed by Carmelita Maldonado

Divina is a Latina writer played by Tricia Cruz, who delivers a sarcastically powerful performance.  Divina is assigned to adapt the novel of a famous writer into a screenplay.  She discovers that the famous writer who she met 30 years ago, El Rey Rey now into his 80’s brilliantly played by Daniel Mora, negates on her adapting his novel.  He thinks she’s not good enough since he’s a genius and she is not!   Divina yells back,” there are more than one genius in this room! “She gives him a “Mal de Ojo” (Evil eye). This confrontation gives El Rey a fright falling to the ground.  Divina takes this one-time life opportunity in her career to smother El Rey Rey to death. In the meantime, she calls her agent Gale played by Blanca Melchor.  Divina tells her agent that the novelist just died but gave her full rights to adapt his novel.  Ms. Cruz ten-minute play has witty lines, a well-developed plot and a surprise ending.  The audience laughed hysterically as she took her career into her own hands! A promising great start for a new writer!

5-BORACHA (Drunk Lady) written & directed by Laura Vega A family secret is reveal the day of the funeral of Felix’s father.  Felix is played by Lori Rubio who is believable as the young drunk daughter of Maria played by Laura Vega.  The bartender Cordova is played by Jaime Sage Ferrar who later is revealed that he is the biological father.  Felix was conceived on a one night of passion between Maria & Cordova. Ms. Vega writes this play in the style of a TV telenovela (soap opera) broad and wild yet funny and entertaining, 6-CHILDLESS CAT LADY by Josefina Lopez directed by Carmelita Maldonado A Latina comes to term with her inability to have babies after an emergency hysterectomy.

The lead character Katrina played by Acriana Lopez ponders on all the babies she could have had while petting her sweet Cat played by Alejandro Valtierra, he does it with lots of flare and purring.  Josefina Lopez the writer of” Real Women Have Curve” breaks the mold by introducing a Shaman woman from another dimension who appears to Katrina (La Catrina is the woman behind the day of the dead) letting her know that she has conceived many babies in other live times!   Two celestial beings appear as representation of her past live babies with antennas on their head.  By naming her lead Katrina (La Catrina- the writer implies that she is pure, gentle but assertive!) This is a running theme throughout Josefina’s plays her female leads are never little helpless women in need of saving.  They are feminine woman, filled with a powerful spirit that shines like a brilliant diamond! Filled with witty lines such as: “A woman is God’s portal to a third dimension so be a mother to brilliant ideas.” “Only women can heal the earth that men have destroyed.”   It’s truly fantastic to see it on stage even if it’s only for ten minutes.  So, the childless cat lady (Women) is not childless after all, because we have lived many lives and giving birth to babies and ideas! I love the powerful message of Josefina’s play.  Brava!

7-TACOS EL MAGO by Ignacio Gonzalez directed by Mari Mercado

When a MAGA Latino storms his taco stand, a street vendor fights back with his delicious Tacos.  Immigrants of all walks of life come to Los Angeles to build a better life! That doesn’t mean it’s an easy life.  Hard work and sacrifice by parents for their children.

This play deals with a supposedly Latino citizen Alfred played by Christopher John Magallanes going after a Taco vendor Jesus played by Eden Vara because he thinks he is an illegal.  He calls an INS agent to take Jesus but when they do a record search, they discover that the vendor is not illegal, but the MAGA Latino Alfred who tried to deport him is a illegal born in Mexico not the USA.  The writer’s message is clear do not do onto others what you do not want to do onto you because it just might backfire!

8- MI HERMANO (My Brother) written and directed by Andrew Lara Cervantes

The subtlety of this play is clear two brothers with different live styles and opposing perspective on love and life.  Juan played by Daniel Marquez and Angel played by Daniel Luna who gravitate to each other’s even though they may not see eye to eye.

An interesting play that explores and tests the bonds of family, identity and the cultural values that define them.

9- WOMAN BEATER written & directed by Christopher John Magallanes

This play was not easy to watch even though the message is powerful to teach a 9-year-old a lesson in discipline.  Chris a 9-year-old has gotten into trouble at school for hitting a girl, but he fails to see the error of his ways. It’s up to karate instructor, Sensei Joe to teach him a lesson that hitting the fairer sex is not something you do unless you are a coward or a Woman Beater. Chris is played by Dane Gbrayes who is believable as the 9-year-old boy.  Sensei Joe is played by Dean Sanclemente who delivers a strong performance as the karate instructor.

10- TURNING POINTS written & directed by Dina Jaurequi

Menopause, Hot flashes and mommies make overs are all discussed between three friends in their 40’s while having brunch.  A well written play with hysterically funny jokes delivered with great comedic timing by three seasoned actresses Dina Jaurequi, Arely Arnica & Emma Valdez

January 17-19, 2025

A Race to the End!  President Biden is working fast and furious to both burnish his image and protect our country as he leaves office.

In a wide-ranging interview with Lawrence O’Donnell, he got an opportunity to look back and talk about how he put policy over politics – likely to the detriment of getting credit for how much was accomplished.

Today, Biden pushed through the Equal Rights Amendment as ratified, and more actions are expected before Monday.

We are all nervous — many scared — about what’s ahead.  I keep remembering the mantra to watch what “they” do, not what “they” say.  The rhetoric has been extreme and upsetting to our LGBTQ community, and it will continue.  Let’s see what exactly gets passed, challenged in court and is ultimately implemented.

The inauguration will feature The Village People, whose leader made some terrible remarks and threats on social media.  His claim that “Y.M.C.A.” should not be a gay anthem and was never written with any known “gay” behavior in mind rings hollow.  KGAY Program Director Chris Shebel made the decision to remove all songs by The Village People from the KGAY playlist.  You can read the story and see the video as reported by our partners at the Coachella Valley Independent here.

Come Monday, there will be a new sheriff in town with the inmates running the asylum.  Let’s circle the wagons and do our best to persevere.  See you at The People’s Rally!

WHAT TO LOVE ABOUT STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW

WHAT TO LOVE ABOUT STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW

In the last few days since the finale, the latest “Star Wars” series on Disney+ is still something to talk about (so naturally, as someone who has studied film and television, and loves everything about Star Wars, I’m going to talk about it).

Check out the trailer:

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” is a captivating addition to the expansive Star Wars universe, exploring themes of adventure, identity, and the complexities of growing up against a backdrop of galactic conflict. Set in the aftermath of the original trilogy, the series follows a group of young protagonists who find themselves lost in the vastness of space, and forced to trust a pirate and Force-user named Jod Na Nawood. This premise allows for a rich exploration of the coming-of-age narrative, mirroring the trials faced by the iconic characters in previous Star Wars stories.

Skelton Crew (Image Credit Matt Kennedy)

One of the most compelling aspects of “Skeleton Crew” is its focus on youth and the challenges of adolescence. The characters, while navigating the dangers of the galaxy, also grapple with their personal identities and moral dilemmas. This duality creates a relatable narrative, as viewers witness the protagonists’ evolution from innocence to maturity. The show deftly balances lighthearted moments with darker themes, reflecting the duality of life in the Star Wars universe.

Moreover, the series enriches the Star Wars mythology by introducing new locations, species, and cultural elements. It also drops a few easter eggs for fans of Star Wars all over to find. The world-building is meticulous, allowing fans to immerse themselves in unexplored corners of the galaxy. The visuals are stunning, showcasing the franchise’s trademark attention to detail while maintaining a fresh aesthetic that appeals to both new and longtime fans.

The performances of the young cast (Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter, and Robert Timothy Smith) are particularly noteworthy. They bring authenticity and depth to their roles, making the audience invest emotionally in their journeys. The chemistry among the characters enhances the storytelling, and the dynamics reflect the complexities of friendship and loyalty. Add the versatility of the seasoned actor Jude Law as Jod, and you have a very balanced cast.

Jaleel White

Aside from Law, the Star Wars universe also welcomed some familiar actors. Jaleel White, who famously played Steve Urkel on the sitcom “Family Matters”, portrays one of the pirates featured in the series. Also coming in the show is Kelly Macdonald portraying Pokkit, a mercenary who has a past with Law’s character, Jod. Macdonald is obviously no stranger to Disney, as she voiced the Disney Princess Merida in the Pixar movie “Brave.” Also welcome to the Star Wars universe; veteran actor Stephen Fry, who voices the Supervisor who rules the protagonists’ home world of At Attin (but I won’t say anything more about it to avoid spoilers).

Palm Springs, CA (The Hollywood Times) 1/16/25 – David Lynch, the groundbreaking filmmaker known for his surreal and unsettling storytelling, has passed away at the age of 79. Lynch, whose career spanned decades and genres, left an indelible mark on cinema, television, and art. His unique ability to blend the bizarre with the beautiful made him one of the most influential and enigmatic figures in the world of entertainment.

Six Men Getting Sick (Six Times) (sometimes known as Six Figures Getting Sick) is a 1967 experimental animated short film, directed by David Lynch.

Born in Missoula, Montana, on January 20, 1946, Lynch’s early years were spent in small-town America, a setting that would later feature prominently in his work. After studying painting and attending the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Lynch gravitated toward filmmaking, making his first short film, Six Men Getting Sick (1967). The experimental piece, which featured a loop of six men experiencing discomfort, was a harbinger of the strange, atmospheric, and often nightmarish world Lynch would go on to create.

In 1977, Lynch directed Eraserhead, a low-budget, black-and-white film that became a cult classic and solidified his reputation as a filmmaker unafraid to challenge conventional storytelling. The film’s haunting visuals, nightmarish imagery, and existential themes marked the beginning of a long and productive career that would feature an iconic series of films and television projects.

The Elephant Man

Lynch’s filmography included notable works such as The Elephant Man (1980), Blue Velvet (1986), Mulholland Drive (2001), and Inland Empire (2006). His films were often marked by a blend of disturbing imagery and surreal narratives, with themes of duality, identity, and the uncanny. He also pushed the boundaries of what was possible within the confines of traditional cinema, merging genres and defying audience expectations.

In addition to his work in film, Lynch is perhaps best known for creating the landmark television series Twin Peaks (1990-1991). The show, which combined elements of soap opera, crime drama, and supernatural mystery, redefined what television could be. Its quirky characters, dreamlike visuals, and unsettling tone turned it into a cultural touchstone, and it remains one of the most influential series in TV history.

Throughout his career, Lynch became known for his ability to draw audiences into unsettling and dreamlike worlds. His work was frequently described as being “Lynchian” — a term that refers to the combination of surreal, bizarre, and often unnerving elements in his storytelling.

Lynch’s influence extended beyond the screen. He was also an accomplished musician, visual artist, and author. He created music for several of his films, often collaborating with composers like Angelo Badalamenti to craft haunting soundtracks that became synonymous with his work. Lynch also continued his artistic endeavors through painting, photography, and his books, including Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity, which reflected his interest in transcendental meditation and its impact on his creative process.

Known for his enigmatic public persona, Lynch’s interviews and appearances were as unconventional as his work. He was often tight-lipped about his personal life and the meanings behind his films, preferring instead to let audiences interpret his work in their own ways. His refusal to explain his films’ mysteries became a signature trait, cementing him as a director who encouraged viewers to embrace ambiguity and explore their own perceptions.

David Lynch is survived by his family and a vast body of work that will continue to inspire filmmakers, artists, and audiences for generations to come. He leaves behind a legacy of artistic innovation that pushed the boundaries of cinema and challenged audiences to look at the world through a different, often uncomfortable, lens.

As the entertainment world grapples with his loss, Lynch’s work will undoubtedly continue to resonate, his unique voice in cinema impossible to replicate but never forgotten.
