Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 6/23/25 – Written by playwright Elyssa Nicole Trust and directed by Emily Lerer, “Observance” to be presented as a TV pilot, explores grief and identity through a Jewish female gaze.

Authentic, the 30-minute work dives deeply into observant Judaism experiences. With the current crisis in Israel, “Observance” could not be more relevant.  Reared in Reform Judaism in the US, the writer was exposed to observant Jews in college and during her time in Israel.

This experience informed her creative expression. And perfectly addressed “Finding Your Truth,” which is Dances With Films LA.’s 2025 theme and its slogan “The True Life,” making it a perfect fit for the festival.

In the cast also, along with David Garelik, Tyler Herman, Liz Samuel, Jonah Feingold, Lauren Schaffel and Geoffrey Greene Trust’s project translated from stage to screen well.

With a relatable plot, someone who is secular converting to belief, the storyline is universal.  Trust’s goal of humanizing Jews from all backgrounds, shedding a positive light on the Jewish experience is important. Especially in these turbulent times in the Middle East and around the world.

Premiering at Dances with Films, June 28, at 11 am TLC Chinese Theatre, Hollywood.
