“Monk In Pieces” Completes  Incredible Career

Visionary multi-media artist Meredith Monk is raw, controversial and a force.  The New Yorker is now the subject of a new fascinating documentary Monk in Pieces featuring her original imagery and sound. With an impressive three-octave vocal range and arresting artistic approach, with her signature plaits, Monk is known for breaking boundaries as a composer, dancer, and choreographer.

Monk in Pieces captures the experimental style and originality of this ageless performer who redefined avant-garde and was creatively prolific.  David Byrne of “Talking Heads,” composer Philip Glass and “Sugarcubes” former vocalist (and actor) Bjork are among those interviewed.

With a subject outrageous and bold, this evocative film will blow you away.

I loved Monk’s short “Ellis Island” and song “Gotham Lullaby” (covered by Bjork) and her edgy epater.  Breaking from convention and complacency.

In the same breath could be mentioned performance artist Marina Abramovic and her once collaborator Lady Gaga. Women who make statements, and defy them.

As a New Yorker at heart and artist/performer, I found unity in Monk’s work. And the documentary about her completely captured my attention.

Billy Shebar, a longtime creative collaborator of Monk directed Monk in Pieces, which premieres August 1  in Los Angeles at Laemmle Royal, 11523 Santa Monica Blvd. Don’t miss it!
