Palm Springs, CA (The Hollywood Times) 4/15/26 – Greater Palm Springs is preparing for a powerful and joyful week as Lesbian Visibility Week arrives April 20–26, 2026, bringing with it a vibrant series of events that celebrate identity, history, and community connection across the Coachella Valley.
Presented through a collaboration between The LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert, The LGBTQ+ History & Archives of the Desert, and Greater Palm Springs Pride, this weeklong initiative aligns with the national movement led by The Curve Foundation. Together, these organizations are amplifying lesbian, queer women’s, sapphic, and non-binary voices through storytelling, education, and celebration.
At its heart, Lesbian Visibility Week is about more than recognition, it’s about ensuring that voices within the community are not only acknowledged but uplifted and supported across all areas of society. Locals and visitors alike are invited to engage in a thoughtfully curated lineup of experiences that reflect both the legacy and the future of the community.
The celebration begins on Monday, April 20, with a ceremonial flag raising at The Center, where Palm Springs Mayor Naomi Soto will officially proclaim the start of Lesbian Visibility Week in the city. This kickoff sets the tone for a week rooted in pride, unity, and progress.
One of the most anticipated highlights arrives Tuesday, April 21, with the debut of “Trailblazing Lesbians of the Coachella Valley” at the Welwood Murray Memorial Library. This compelling exhibit honors the pioneers who helped shape the region’s LGBTQ+ landscape, including Barbara Carpenter, Gail Christian, Lucy DeBardelaben, Ruth Debra, Marjorie Main, Joani Hannan, and Melinda Tremaglio. Their stories reflect resilience, leadership, and a lasting impact that continues to inspire future generations.
That same day offers opportunities for connection and dialogue, from a morning coffee meetup at 4 Paws Coffee Co. to an engaging Learning Lounge session at The Center led by Dr. Karyl Ketchum, who will explore critical health disparities affecting lesbians and discuss pathways toward collective care and improved outcomes.
Midweek programming continues with a film screening on Wednesday, April 22 at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. The evening features a documentary spotlighting Joani Hannan alongside a thought-provoking exploration of queer female identity in cinema—offering both reflection and representation on the big screen.
On Thursday, April 23, community members can gather for a relaxed wine tasting at Palm Springs Bottle Shop, blending social connection with celebration in an inclusive setting.
The weekend culminates with a high-energy meetup during the Big Gay BBQ in the Arenas District, hosted at Hunters—notably the only lesbian-owned bar in Palm Springs. This closing celebration promises a lively atmosphere filled with pride, friendship, and visibility at the heart of the city’s LGBTQ+ scene.
Lesbian Visibility Week in Greater Palm Springs is made possible through the support of dedicated sponsors and partners, including Palm Springs Bottle Shop, LuLu California Bistro, Casago Desert to Coast, The Palm Springs Public Library, the Welwood Murray Memorial Library, The L-Fund, and numerous community advocates and archivists.
Their collective commitment underscores the importance of preserving LGBTQ+ history while creating inclusive spaces where all individuals feel seen, heard, and celebrated.
As Greater Palm Springs embraces Lesbian Visibility Week, the message is clear: visibility matters. Through art, education, and community connection, this week serves as both a celebration and a call to action, honoring those who paved the way while continuing to build a more inclusive future for all.
