Palm Springs, CA (The Hollywood Times) 4/10/26 – One of the most heartfelt and unforgettable moments of Desert Legends 2026 came during Saturday night’s sold-out concert and awards presentation, as the audience gathered to celebrate an artist whose impact reaches far beyond the stage.

With warmth, humor, and her signature charm, Vickie Shaw welcomed the crowd and reflected on the joy of the weekend, from the spirited golf and pickleball tournaments to the high-energy pool party that had everyone dancing for hours. She then invited Desert Legends co-producer and The Hollywood Times Senior Editor, Valerie Milano, to the stage.

Milano delivered a moving tribute that captured exactly why Sweet Baby J’ai was chosen as this year’s honoree. She spoke about how J’ai embodies everything Desert Legends stands for, talent, community, and heart. She described the unmistakable magic that happens the moment J’ai steps on stage, when the room shifts, the music takes over, and everyone feels a little cooler, a little braver, and completely present in the moment.

She emphasized that while J’ai’s voice is extraordinary, it is her heart that truly defines her legacy. Through her work with the Sunset Music and Education Foundation and the Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival, J’ai has consistently uplifted women, LGBTQ+ artists, and emerging musicians, creating platforms where voices are not only heard but celebrated. Milano also added a lighthearted note, reminding the audience of J’ai’s ability to make music with a washboard and spoons, an artist whose creativity knows no bounds, which she later proved first-hand during Jennifer Corday’s performance when she jumped onstage to jam, washboard in hand, bringing the crowd even more.

Milano also reflected on a full-circle moment from the very first Desert Legends, then called Dinah Legends, held at Casa Milano four years ago. She recalled being in her kitchen when Sweet Baby J’ai suddenly ran in asking for two large spoons. At the time, Milano had no idea why, until later, when she stepped outside and saw J’ai on the yard stage, playing those very spoons and jamming effortlessly with fellow artists. From that spontaneous, joy-filled beginning to now, performing in the Filmore Room at Hotel Zoso, it was a powerful reminder of just how far Desert Legends, and this incredible community, has come.

As Milano presented the 2026 Desert Legends Award, the room filled with applause, honoring not just a performer, but a visionary leader and community builder.

Taking the stage, Sweet Baby J’ai delivered an acceptance speech that was heartfelt, humorous, and deeply personal. She shared that being in Palm Springs felt like a full-circle moment, recalling her early days performing with her Women in Jazz All-Star Band in intimate settings, pool parties, and gala events, moments that were vibrant, free, and unapologetically authentic.

She spoke candidly about noticing a shift over time, particularly for women as they moved through different stages of life. While spaces like Dinah Shore weekend remained iconic, she recognized that many women were no longer experiencing those environments in the same way. Rather than accept that disconnect, she chose to create something new spaces rooted in inclusivity, connection, and authenticity.

Her vision was clear: community for everyone. She emphasized that her audience has always been diverse; across race, age, identity, and experience, and that everyone deserves spaces that reflect that reality.

J’ai also addressed a turning point in her music career, when she noticed that while women often fronted bands, female musicians were still underrepresented. Determined to shift that narrative, she created the Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival with a commitment to featuring all-female musicians. What followed were powerful, spontaneous collaborations, artists meeting for the first time on stage, creating something extraordinary in real time.

She shared how those moments consistently left performers inspired, reinforcing the idea that when women come together in creative spaces, something truly special happens. Over time, she has seen that impact ripple outward, with more visibility for women musicians across the industry.

With humility, she reflected that perhaps her work contributed in some small way to that shift, and if so, she felt her mission had meaning.

As she closed, expressing gratitude for being seen, valued, and part of such a powerful community, the audience responded with a standing ovation.

It was more than an award presentation. It was a celebration of legacy, impact, and the power of creating spaces where everyone belongs.

In a weekend filled with connection, music, and joy, honoring Sweet Baby J’ai stood as a defining moment, one that perfectly captured the spirit of Desert Legends.
