Down The Length, a short film written and directed by Milo Edwards, tackles profound loss, grief, and the memories that haunt us. The film centers around a young painter, played by Joseph Quinn, who is trying to meet a gallery deadline but struggles with artist’s block. He is disturbed and tormented by outside forces related to his recent past, life choices, and family memories.

Quinn’s portrayal of the artist is exceptional; he has appeared in several of my favorite films in recent years, including “Warfare” and “A Quiet Place: Day One.” In an effort to find inspiration, his character records his increasingly disturbing dreams. As days and weeks pass, he becomes haunted by these recordings and their interpretations. We watch a man actively self-destruct as he wallows in self-destructive tendencies and stagnation.

The turning point comes with a visit from a friend, who helps him put his grief and pain into perspective. This interaction allows the audience to grasp his reality, experiences, and the ways he copes with profound loss. I believe that grief and pain can be both equalizing and unique for everyone who experiences it; we can never truly know how we would handle such a tragedy, which is part of life’s complexity. To quote the great Hippocrates, “Life is short, art is long, experience difficult.”

I felt very honored to meet Milo Edwards, who is truly brilliant and one of the great talents emerging in the industry. “Down The Length” had its West Coast premiere at the 22nd annual Hollyshorts Film Festival in Hollywood on August 13, 2026, at the legendary TCL Chinese Theatre, and it is nominated for Best Performance.
