DEI is a compelling short film written and directed by Jill V. Dae. The narrative centers around a bigoted man who unexpectedly finds himself in the body of an immigrant child on Dia de los Muertos. However, the film goes beyond this premise, offering a surreal exploration of the everyday life of an immigrant family during challenging times marked by issues such as ICE separations, workforce disruptions, and societal division over immigration policies.
The film features Lochlyn Munro as Bryan, who experiences life from a different perspective after switching bodies with an immigrant child for a day. This unique twist gives the narrative a “Freaky Friday” vibe, but with a deeper focus on cultural understanding and empathy.
“DEI” not only addresses politically charged themes but also sheds light on aspects immigrant culture that may be underappreciated or misunderstood. It encourages viewers to reflect on their own heritage and the celebrations they may not be familiar with.
The film raises important questions about the relationship between art and reality, asking whether art imitates life or vice versa. Through its politically driven message, “DEI” mirrors contemporary societal challenges, including the presence of ICE, a divisive political climate, and broader national concerns.
“DEI” premiered on August 15th at the 22nd Annual Hollyshorts Film Festival in Los Angeles, showcasing its relevance and importance in today’s social landscape.
