Cinelounge Sunset has closed its cinema at 6464 Sunset Boulevard. For the last decade, Cinelounge Sunset specialized in showing independent, art house, and genre films, as well as screening the latest Hollywood studio movies. Providing state-of-the-art projection, the most comfortable seating, and a selection of healthy refreshments including its own signature line of premium popcorn, Cinelounge Sunset offered a unique movie theatre experience to the Hollywood theatre going community.
As recent Academy Award® winning filmmaker Sean Baker noted in his acceptance speech, brick-and-mortar theatres that show independent films provide a real service to movie lovers.
Spiraling costs as well as disruptions to business (pandemic, strikes, wildfires) have made it impossible for Cinelounge Sunset to continue.
Cinelounge is grateful to the patrons who attended showings at our original location on Las Palmas Street, our pop-up drive-in during the pandemic lockdown, rooftop and 900-seat main stages screenings on Vine Street at The Montalban, and our final deluxe cinema at 6464 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.
Christian Meoli is Cinelounge Founder and CEO with Co-CEO wife and partner Camilla Meoli. Christian stated, “We did the best we could to hold on as long as we could and we are heartbroken Los Angeles loses another screen devoted to servicing the Industry and most importantly the thousands of independent filmmakers we championed and introduced and showcased over our 10 years. If someone could come in and support our endeavors it wouldn’t take much for us to be back up and running, but we’ve carried the flag as far as we could go”
Although Cinelounge has ceased operations in Hollywood, cinephiles visiting the Bay Area can find Cinelounge at our triplex in Tiburon, near San Francisco. For information about Cinelounge Tiburon, go to http://cineloungefilm.com
