Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 6/4/25 – Kicking off the night with vintage flair was British psych-pop band The Heavy Heavy, whose nostalgic yet contemporary sound immediately captivated early arriving Black Keys fans. Hailing from Brighton, England, the group channels the spirit of Fleetwood Mac, Jefferson Airplane, and The Mamas & the Papas—with lush harmonies, powerful guitar work, and sun-soaked vibes—infused with a fresh, modern twist. Judging by the crowd rising to their feet at the set’s end, The Heavy Heavy likely won over many new fans.
Following a quick set change, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney—The Black Keys—took the stage alone, in front of a red curtain, building anticipation before unveiling their full backing band. From the first riff, they delivered pure, unfiltered rock and roll, igniting The Greek Theatre with gritty soul and electrifying energy. The setlist spanned their vast catalog, keeping the packed amphitheater on its feet from start to finish.
With vivid visuals and bold, moody lighting, the show was equal parts rock revival and blues-soaked spectacle. Auerbach’s guitar work was masterful—ferocious yet melodic, seamlessly blending blues licks with modern rock hooks. Carney’s drumming was a relentless force, anchoring every track with drive and intensity. Nearly 25 years into their career, The Black Keys proved at The Greek that their live show remains powerful and compelling, with an authentic energy and connection that keeps fans coming back.
Throughout the night, the crowd—ranging from longtime devotees to new fans—sang, danced, and cheered with infectious enthusiasm. The connection between band and audience was undeniable, transforming The Greek from a traditional amphitheater into something far more intimate: a gritty, joyful garage jam beneath the Hollywood Hills.
This tour marks a powerful rebound after last year’s abrupt cancellation of their International Players Tour, which led the band to part ways with their management amidst sluggish arena ticket sales. Rather than retreat, The Black Keys channeled the disappointment into creative fuel, emerging with a new album, No Rain, No Flowers, whose name now leads this revitalized tour.
Formed in Akron, Ohio, in 2001, Auerbach and Carney have built their legacy on authenticity, evolution, and a refusal to follow trends. With 13 studio albums and 11 gold singles to their name, they’ve remained fiercely independent, each running their own recording studios—Easy Eye Sound and Audio Eagle Studio—when not on tour.
At The Greek, The Black Keys did more than just perform—they reignited why their music still resonates. With a sound that’s both soulful and sincere, they embody the very essence of rock and roll. Their songs linger long after the final note, leaving an undeniable impression that stays with you.
