Released this summer by author and photographer Amy Gaskin, “Marilyn Forever: Marilyn Monroe—A Symbol of Hope” takes readers and fans on a captivating journey through the lens of Gaskin’s camera. An acclaimed photographer, Gaskin captures the passion, admiration, and enduring connection that Marilyn Monroe fans share with the legendary icon. Through striking photographs and heartfelt storytelling, the book celebrates Monroe’s lasting legacy, revealing how she continues to inspire hope and touch lives around the world decades after her passing.
Reflecting on her career, Gaskin shares how she discovered her passion for photography, a journey that led her to embrace the power of visual storytelling, “When I was little, my grandparents had a collection of Life magazines in their basement and I would spend hours looking through them, dreaming about the photographs and the stories they told, “ she said. Adding, “Those images fascinated me, and even then I knew they had a special kind of power. At the time, though, I never imagined I would become a photographer. I didn’t own a camera, and I had never taken a photography class. Instead, I went to business school and earned a master’s degree in business. While I was there, I noticed something that completely changed my perspective. I could spend hours creating spreadsheets filled with facts, figures, and carefully calculated data, but they rarely inspired people to take action. Then someone would see a single photograph, and suddenly they would be moved to respond. That experience taught me that photographs have the unique ability to communicate emotion in a way that numbers and words often cannot.”
Speaking about her recently released book and Marilyn Monroe’s enduring legacy, Gaskin reflects on the creative journey behind the project, which began unexpectedly during the height of the pandemic,”It all began when I happened upon Marilyn Monroe’s crypt, not far from where I live in Los Angeles. She’s buried in a small, tucked-away cemetery near UCLA, just off Wilshire Boulevard, a place most people drive past without ever realizing it’s there. Unlike the larger, more famous Hollywood cemeteries such as Forest Lawn or Hollywood Forever, this cemetery is quiet and unassuming, making it one of the most unexpected places to find such an iconic figure’s final resting place. At the time, I knew very little about Marilyn Monroe, but discovering her final resting place sparked a curiosity that led me to learn more about her life.” Gaskin discovered that Marilyn Monroe’s lasting impact extended far beyond her beauty or status as a Hollywood icon. Through conversations with fans and her own research, she found what resonated most with people was Marilyn’s personal journey, challenges, and empathy she had for others which readers will learn more about in the book.
Explaining further, Gaskin elaborates, “Somebody might mention her beauty as part of what they told me, but it wasn’t the driving reason. The driving reasons were really her personal story, her story of spending time in an orphanage and having a very tumultuous childhood. She lived in a lot of different places and spent time in foster care because her mother wasn’t able to care for her. In the book, you’ll see that I actually stood right in front of her orphanage and photographed down the alleyway that Marilyn used to look at.”
