I attended a performance of “A Beautiful Mess” at the Broadwater Theater in Hollywood, an original play written and performed by Angel Davis. This engagement offers a unique theatrical experience, blending elements of a TED talk, referred to in the play as a DED talk with multimedia presentations and personal storytelling.
The play explores profound themes of life, death, grief, and the human experience through Angel’s intimate perspective on mortality. Angel Davis poignantly shares her personal journey with loss, recounting her experiences with the deaths of her brother, father, and husband. Through her narrative, she delves into the complexities of grief and the societal taboos surrounding death, highlighting the universal nature of loss and the various ways people cope with it.
The production is directed by Savannah Schoenecker, featuring a talented cast: Angel plays the Speaker, Andre Williams portrays Bryon (Angel’s brother), Ronald Sinclair takes on the role of Leon (Angel’s father), and Samuel Alfiler plays Brad (Angel’s husband). The performance allows the audience to connect deeply with Angel’s life story, fostering an atmosphere of intimacy and vulnerability. It is produced by her current husband, Peter Hermes.
“A Beautiful Mess” ultimately serves as a reminder that while life is often complicated and messy, it can also be profoundly beautiful.
