The 2026 Austin Film Festival is officially buzzing as the provocative new feminist thriller SHEEPWELL prepares to make its highly anticipated World Premiere this Sunday, November 1st. Gaining momentum as one of the festival’s must-watch indie releases, this bold, twist-laden feature from SheNYC Arts is inspired by Lope de Vega’s classic play Fuenteovejuna. Bringing a razor-sharp modern edge to timeless themes of resistance, the film features an impressive ensemble cast, including Alix Lapri (Power Book), Michole Briana White (from Netflix and A24’s acclaimed series BEEF), Connor Paolo (Gossip Girl), and Denise Grayson (The Social Network).
The gripping narrative of SHEEPWELL kicks off in the isolated heart of rural Alabama, where a guarded academic named Wattle—a whiskey-drinking, shotgun-wielding novelist played by the critically acclaimed Obie Award winner Michole Briana White—and her daughter Sarah have their quiet lives completely upended. After a mysterious naked man stumbles onto their property claiming he has been robbed, the two women cautiously offer him refuge. What begins as an act of tense hospitality quickly spirals into a dangerous, claustrophobic psychological game where a fragile act of mercy tightens into a high-stakes battle over truth, control, and authority.
The project’s artistic vision relies heavily on creating an intense, atmospheric landscape rather than relying on standard thriller tropes. Writer-director Kim Caicedo, a Colombian-American AFI alumna and recipient of the prestigious DGA Jury Prize, notes that she wanted the film to feel less like a sequence of events and more like an emotional landscape where quiet pressure mirrors the internal lives of the characters. This thematic boldness perfectly mirrors the mission of producer and co-writer Danielle DeMatteo, who originally founded SheNYC Arts out of frustration with systemic inequities and a lack of leadership roles for women in storytelling, turning a small theater initiative into a powerful multi-city platform dedicated to elevating new indie cinema icons.
This dedication to authentic independent cinema shines through every technical element, highlighted by award-winning Mexican cinematographer Jessica Arzate’s masterful choice to capture the raw texture of the story using traditional 16mm and 35mm film processes. Co-producer Lauren Elizabeth Harris emphasizes that SHEEPWELL stands as a profound testament to creative collaboration and a shared belief in the power of original female-led narratives. Seamlessly blending the gripping tension of a slow-burn thriller with the deeply grounded naturalism of character study, this brilliant production from Pathway Pictures is positioned to make an unforgettable splash at its Austin premiere and set a new standard for independent visual storytelling.
