Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 3/9/23 – In 1996, Wes Craven delivered yet another fabulous contribution to cinema. In 2011, Wes Craven rebooted the franchise for the postmodern era. Bringing back to life the elements of which we Horror fanatics have fallen in love with and pasting them next to commentary that speaks to our everyday lives. Little did he know, Wes Craven had created the foundation of a trilogy that would surpass him.
In 2022, Paramount Pictures teamed up with two brave directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not, VHS) to pick up the impossible task of continuing Wes Craven’s legacy.
In 2023, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett surprises the modern audience with a slasher that not only does Wes Craven justice, but the horror shoulders Craven stood on. Taking from great Italian Giallo & the groundbreaking American slashers we all know and love, SCREAM VI steals the show & establishes itself as the peak of modern horror, 2 reflecting the original’s creative prowess that flourished in 1996.
With its newly found ironed sense of identity, this film blossoms into what I would say to be the best Horror/Thriller of 2023 thus far, & the most impactful SCREAM sequel since the original. Stars Melissa Barrera (Sam), Jenna Ortega (Tara), Mason Gooding (Chad), & Courtney Cox (Gale) knock it out of the park & leaving the crowds screaming. Supported by a pretty thorough narrative (while still somewhat suffering from weak characters at times), refreshing humor & far more violence a Scream fan could ever ask for, SCREAM VI pushes to deliver a sequel worthy of being the heir of Wes Craven, & it succeeds tremendously.
As an audience member, it felt good to finally have a moment where I could leave the theater and honestly say to myself, “I can’t wait for the next one”.
