Hollywood has long used its reach for causes extending far beyond entertainment. From animal rescue campaigns to humanitarian crises, actors, filmmakers and public figures have demonstrated how visibility can turn an overlooked story into an international conversation.

Today, an animal-welfare organization in Türkiye is asking for exactly that kind of visibility.

On July 27, approximately 350 dogs were reportedly removed from the living area operated by Melekler Şehri, Sokak Hayvanlarını, Koruma Derneği (City of Angels Stray Animal Protection Association) in Kırklareli, Türkiye.

According to the organization, officials entered the sanctuary and removed the dogs despite objections from their caretakers. Since then, Melekler Şehri says it has been seeking clear information about where the animals were taken, their current condition and what will happen to them. Now, their caretakers and supporters are asking a simple but urgent question:

Where are the dogs?

Melekler Şehri has spent years caring for abandoned, injured and sick animals. What began as a smaller rescue effort expanded as more animals needed help. The organization says approximately 800 animals currently depend on it for food, shelter and care.

The case comes amid continuing controversy surrounding the treatment of stray animals in Türkiye. In 2024, legislation was enacted requiring municipalities to collect stray dogs from public areas and place them in shelters. The law, which also allows euthanasia under certain circumstances, was strongly criticized by animal-welfare advocates.

The situation described by Melekler Şehri, however, raises additional questions because the organization says the dogs were living on privately controlled land and were actively being cared for, including receiving food, shelter and veterinary treatment.

Footage and photographs shared by the organization documenting the July 27 incident have intensified concerns among its supporters.

The questions now are straightforward: Where were the approximately 350 dogs taken? Are they safe? Are they receiving adequate food, shelter and veterinary care? And what is planned for their future?

Why Visibility Matters?

This is where the power of a larger platform can make a difference.

The entertainment community has an extraordinary ability to bring global attention to stories that might otherwise remain local. Actors, filmmakers, musicians and other public figures regularly use their platforms to support animal welfare and humanitarian causes. Sometimes a single share can introduce an issue to millions of people.

The goal is not to ask the public to accept unverified allegations or reach conclusions before all sides have been heard. It is to ask for transparency, independent review and confirmation of the animals’ safety.

Melekler Şehri says it can provide photographs, videos, veterinary information, official documentation and other supporting material concerning the animals and the July 27 incident.

The organization is also facing another challenge. According to its representatives, insufficient donations have made it increasingly difficult to provide food and veterinary care for the hundreds of animals that remain dependent on the sanctuary.

Animal-welfare organizations, journalists, attorneys, veterinarians and public figures with the ability to amplify the case could help by asking for verified information about the removed dogs and drawing attention to the animals still requiring care.

Their caretakers are trying to make sure their story does not disappear with them.

Sometimes the first step toward change is simply making sure a story is see
