Vincent Cassel shines in the New Short Film by Nabil Kechouhen, titled “Le Colisée,” which is also dubbed in English as “The Colosseum.” This exciting French film explores the behind-the-scenes dynamics of a basketball coach, played by Vincent Cassel, and his team during the final of a basketball championship.
The story centers around Mehdi, the point guard for Elan Chalon, who finds himself torn between the pressures of the game and the challenges in his personal life. Written by Samy Baaorun and Nabil Kechouhen, the film opens with a team of basketball players discussing their narcissistic pursuits. Suddenly, the coach enters the room to school them. Cassel delivers an impactful performance, breaking them down while encouraging them to improve as players and teammates. Notably, he benches his top player, probing and challenging him from the sidelines, revealing that the coach may serve as a father figure.
As the game progresses, the stakes rise, and though the team comes close to winning, they ultimately fall short. Akram Naji, the lead actor, delivers a stellar performance as a troubled basketball player with high hopes and dreams, while also contending with a demanding coach who pushes him to his limits. This is only the second film for Naji, who previously appeared in another short titled “Python.” He is captivating, and I look forward to seeing more of his work.
Vincent Cassel masterfully portrays the role of a coach, teacher, or mentor, and this performance is no exception. I may be a bit biased, as I believe he excels in every role. I first discovered him in the film “Irreversible” (2002) and subsequently watched many of his other works. I’ve seen all of his English-language films and a significant number of his French films. His talent makes me want to learn French.
I loved this film, and I believe you will too. I wish it were a full-length feature; I would love to see him lead his team to greatness.
The Colosseum “Le Colisée” will screen at this year’s 22nd Annual HollyShorts Film Festival in Hollywood.
