Hollywood, CA (The Hollywood Times) 8/11/25 – At this year’s HollyShorts Film Festival, Abbesi Akhamie brings a fresh and distinctive voice with The Incredible Sensational Fiancée of Sèyí Àjàyí. The short, which earned an Honorable Mention in Comedy at SeriesFest, follows Constance, a brilliant scholar who discovers her fiancé’s secret engagement and decides to take calculated revenge. The story unfolds in a world shaped by African retrofuturism and the heightened emotion of melodrama, with inspiration drawn from the 1960s African cultural renaissance.

In our conversation, Akhamie explained that the blend of comedy and drama came together gradually. Known for her serious work—including a short in the Criterion Collection—she allowed humor to emerge naturally during writing and further shaped it in the edit. The result is a film that shifts in tone depending on where it plays: boisterous laughter in Lagos, quieter smiles in Indianapolis, and lively reactions in New York.

Costume and production design are central to the film’s impact, not as decoration but as a reflection of its world-building. Akhamie’s vision of an imagined African future, rooted in historical optimism, is carried through every detail on screen. Constance’s journey—grounded in the expectations placed on millennial women and the timelines they’re told to follow—feels specific yet relatable.

Akhamie values the direct connection with audiences, maintaining both personal and film-specific social media pages and a website where viewers can share feedback. She sees festival screenings as the most rewarding part of the process, a welcome break from the administrative demands of filmmaking.

The Incredible Sensational Fiancée of Sèyí Àjàyí screens at the TCL Chinese Theatres on August 12 at noon. For Akhamie, the HollyShorts premiere is both a homecoming and a step forward, as she prepares for the film’s streaming availability and her next trip to Lagos.
