Queerbait is a thought-provoking short film that explores mentorship, May-December relationships, and the complexities of crossing boundaries in an academic setting. The narrative focuses on a talented classics student named Ezra, portrayed by Sydney Mae Diaz, who approaches his professor, played by Matthew Floyd Miller, for a recommendation to attend Yale University. The professor invites Ezra to his home for a late dinner to discuss the student’s future and potential.

The film explores the dynamics of mentor-mentee relationships, particularly the moral and ethical boundaries that can become blurred in the pursuit of one’s future. The writer and director, Nate Gualtieri, shared insights into his motivations for creating this film, influenced by his personal experiences as a trans man and the fetishization he has encountered. He also addressed the nuanced dynamics that exist between older and younger queer men in mentorship scenarios, acknowledging the gray areas and complexities of such relationships.

Gualtieri discussed his journey of self-acceptance regarding his sexuality and the adjustment he faced in navigating his masculinity after transitioning. He emphasized that while relationships between younger and older queer men may raise eyebrows, they are often more common and accepted within the queer community.
While watching Queerbait, some viewers could interpret the relationship as one between a young man and an older man rather than focusing exclusively on the characters’ identities. However, the narrative also creates tension that raises questions about predatory behavior, particularly in a scene where Ezra retreats to a bathroom during a storm that coincides with a sudden power outage. Many in the audience including myself suspected that the professor may have manipulated the situation, adding a layer of discomfort to the story.
Despite these unsettling elements, it is acknowledged that Ezra actively sought guidance and chose to meet his professor in a private setting to further his academic ambitions. “Queerbait” was screened at the Hollywood Queer Short Film Festival on October 3rd as part of the “To Be Young Again” block.
