People with disabilities experience traditional joys of summer camp in Big Bear (July 27 – Aug. 2) & get makeovers for formal dance (July 31)

This year Easterseals Camp (July 27 – Aug. 2) is celebrating its 52nd anniversary and I’m hoping you’ll want to do a story on a summer camp that makes this beloved tradition accessible to everyone, including people with physical and/or developmental disabilities.

For one week each summer, Easterseals Southern California has held a fully accessible camp at Big Bear’s Camp Oakes, which gives 120 people with disabilities the opportunity to swim, canoe, zipline, tube slide, put on plays, do crafts, sit around the campfire and experience the joys of summer. (There are 130 volunteers supporting the camp.)

And once again they will hold their annual formal dance (Thurs., July 31) when CVS Health brings a team of beauty advisors who volunteer their time to do hair & makeup for the campers prior to the big event.

Regular camp activities July 31 are 10-11:15 a.m. and 2-3:15 p.m. (the latter timeframe less well attended as some, especially women, want to get ready for the formal). The makeovers will take place 2:30-4 p.m., with a mocktail party at 4:30 p.m., formal dinner at 6 p.m. and the dance at 7 p.m.

Easterseals Camp is at: Camp Oakes, 47400 Monte Vista Dr., Big Bear, CA 92314
