Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Joy Oladokun, JD Souther, Matisyahu, and more to take part in intimate daytime discussions moderated by the likes of Anthony Mason, Tressie McMillan Cottom and Marissa R. Moss: 2nd Annual Park City Song Summit to take place September 7-9 in Park City, Utah; All tickets on sale now.
Park City, UT – From day one at Park City Song Summit—the intimate mountain retreat for music lovers held September 7-9 in Park City, Utah—founders wanted to put an emphasis on the power of the song, not just in performance, but their inspiration, development, and creation as well. That’s why half of Song Summit’s programming comes in the form of Summit Labs: open-ended discussions and panels designed to bring fans closer to the artists they love, both physically and contextually. Before fans and attendees take to the Canyons Amphitheater and the clubs of Park City in the evenings, Park City Song Summit artists will have already clued them into the why and how the music comes about, struggles and breakthroughs alike.
This year’s Song Summit Labs includes subjects like The Tangled Roots of Black and Latinx Music, Rhythm of Recovery: Music and Mental Health, and Hip Hop: The First 50 Years—the last of which is a discussion with two of the genre’s greatest trail blazers, Chuck D and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels—as well as on-site live podcast recordings of Joe Pug’s Working Songwriter and Eric Krasno’s Plus One. There are also a number of songwriter rounds and songwriter “Hall of Fame Tributes” featuring the likes of JD Souther, Jeffrey Steele, and Even Stevens. A full list of Song Summit Labs can be found below.
In the evenings, Summit Lab participants will take to stages around Park City to bring their music to life. This year’s Song Summit performance lineup finds hit country songwriters like Jeffrey Steele and Earl Bud Lee on the same list as hip-hop pioneers Grandmaster Flash and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels; Cuban wunderkind Cimafunk next to R&B guitar shredder Celisse; and New Orleans legend Anders Osborne and Grammy-winning guitarist, songwriter, and producer Eric Krasno alongside Dead legend, Bobby Weir—who’s making a grand return to Park City forty years after his band’s show there. A full list of performers can also be found below or at parkcitysongsummit.com.
Park City Song Summit 2023 will be held in a new location at The Canyons Village. “The Canyons Village reflects the intention of our programming and provides ample physical room for our minds and hearts to roam in a variety of settings,” says Anderson. 3-day Summit Passes and add-ons, single-day passes, and individual show tickets are on sale now at this link. More About Park City Song Summit: Park City Song Summit is the brainchild of Ben Anderson, Park City resident and lifetime musician/founding member of the jam band Aiko. He started the Song Summit to celebrate his passion for music as well as his personal mission to bring clarity and normalcy to the struggle’s musicians, artists, and music lovers alike face around mental health and dependency. “The Song Summit was created as an immersive hangout for song lovers here in the beautiful mountains of Park City, Utah; a chance to explore and celebrate the myth, inspiration, passion, and power of song with a group of musicians, creatives, songwriters, thought leaders, and industry pioneers,” says Anderson. “Creating and providing funding to grow Park City Song Summit was in part my love for song but to an even larger degree, to provide awareness and resources for those who may also be challenged by trauma, addiction, and mental health issues. Our Labs are meant to be a safe space for artists and audiences alike to be inspired by others who have faced these challenges and to explore the ever-relevant issues of inclusivity, opportunity, and equality.” Song Summit supports More Than Music Foundation, Stand Together MusicThe PhoenixAmber Health, and the Huntsman Mental Health Institute.
