Hollyshorts Film Fest – Through comedy, Tiger Ji’s DEATH AND RAMEN questions the taboo that surrounds death

Starring Bobby Lee (Reservation Dogs, MADtv) and Matt Jones (Breaking Bad, Mom)

Director Tiger Ji’s DEATH AND RAMEN is a dark buddy comedy between a ramen chef (Bobby Lee) and the Grim Reaper (Matt Jones). The depressed ramen chef is visited by a bureaucratic Death after botching his suicide. Insistent that he can’t die on an empty stomach, the ramen chef persuades Death to go to this ramen shop for one final meal. DEATH AND RAMEN was written by Tiger after losing his grandfather to illness, and he dedicates the film to those who have lost a loved one. Although about death, it’s also a love letter to life, and this funny-sad film was selected from thousands of entries to screen in competition at the OSCAR-qualifying Holly Fest.

22-year-old Writer/Director Tiger Ji is from Hong Kong. He gained recognition at the tender age of 19 with his award-winning short WUHAN DRIVER, which caught attention from Jonathan Sanger (Vanilla Sky, Elephant Man). Tiger graduated from NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study, where he studied philosophy and literature. He is also a student of acclaimed filmmakers like Ruben Ostlund (Triangle of Sadness, The Square), and Lucrecia Martel (La Cienega), and is an alum of the 2022 Short to Feature Lab led by Jim Cummings (Thunder Road). Tiger is currently developing his first feature adaptation of DEATH & RAMEN.

Producer Scott Aharoni is the Co-Founder of Cinegryphon Entertainment, an American independent entertainment company specializing in film and television development, production and financing. He was born in Great Neck, New York and has produced several award-winning films including LEYLAK and GREEN. His latest film LES CRIMINELS, was shortlisted for the 94th Academy Awards.

Executive Producer Jonathan Sanger is an Academy Award winning filmmaker and producer. Jonathan is renowned for his work with legendary filmmaker David Lynch on THE ELEPHANT MAN, Mel Brooks on THE PRODUCERS, and Tom Cruise on VANILLA SKY. He has a credit of over fifty films as a producer and his other works include SUSPECT ZERO, FRANCES, and FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR.

The superb cinematography was created by Stefan Nachmann, a Brooklyn-based Director of Photography hailing from Germany.

DEATH AND RAMEN will screen in competition in Holly Fest this month.
