If the old adage ‘there is nothing new under the sun’ is true, directors then must find unique ways to retell the same story with majesty and conviction. Litwak hits that mission out of the park considering how seamlessly he used the fantastical setting of space to illustrate very intense human struggles. Michael deliberates, “I think the best thing that science fiction and fantasy can do is explore metaphors, allegories, and all human things in a way that is very expressionistic. I really love it when stories can take a feeling and translate what those feelings are on screen and create an experience for people. I think if you were to tape that experience based on how it happens in real life it can feel a little anticlimactic, but in your own daily life when you encounter certain struggles, it feels more important than it might to somebody else. One of the powers of film is that you can take stories that everyone can relate to, you can exaggerate those stores so that the audience can get to a deeper truth.”

Indulging in this impactful piece, one cannot help but find themselves captivated by the intertwined narratives of Molli and Max. Litwak, in his brilliant portrayal, meticulously dissects some of the pivotal moments in our nation’s history, spanning the tumultuous years of the 2010s and 2020s. Employing elements of fantasy and satire, Litwak delves into significant events such as the 2016 presidential elections, skillfully weaving in the dread that gripped our world during the Covid-19 pandemic. The director reveals, “Part of what I wanted to explore in this movie is the ways different aspects of your life influence your relationship and the way that your relationships influence different aspects of your life. Ultimately, there are so many things that are outside of your control in reality, but there are certain things that you can control in your life. One of the most important aspects of that is learning how to forgive yourself and love yourself despite your flaws; I think that is a part of growing up and what you need to do in order to be in a healthy relationship. That has always been the core of this movie- how do these 2 people support each other through different phases of their lives and help each other grow into more fully formed people and how do they help each other reckon with the fact that life is filled with a lot of chaotic elements?’

The film, a testament to Litwak’s storytelling prowess, artfully magnifies universal experiences. Through Molli and Max’s intertwining narratives, the director delves into the intricacies of relationships, exploring the influence of life’s various facets on personal connections. As the characters navigate through the chaotic elements of existence, Litwak’s work becomes a compelling exploration of forgiveness, self-love, and the transformative nature of healthy relationships.
