I attended a performance of “No Small Parts” by Force of Nature Productions at Sawyer’s Playhouse located at LACAE in North Hollywood. This production featured a collection of original plays authored by Evan Baughfman, Tyler Bianchi, Katie Brady, Shayne Eastin, Eric Eberwein, Julie Jigour, Tom Jones, Jonathan Josephson, Dana Hammer, Thomas J. Misuraca, and Felix Racelis.
The first play, titled “October 31st, 2063,” presented a speculative vision of Halloween in the year 2063, where traditional candy has been replaced by patches that offer a mental taste experience. It humorously highlighted the concept of “brain Netflix,” although it was depicted as having bugs that could be quite dangerous. This play effectively set the tone for the other performances, which explored various hypotheticals and reimagined aspects of daily life.
Another highlight of the evening was “Domestic Help,” a four-part play woven throughout the show that depicted the life of a busy woman who hires a clown as domestic help from an agency. The narratives throughout the evening were colorful, witty, and humorous. “Of Carson Cat Food and Popsicles” poignantly reflected on the sweetness of everlasting love and the joys of growing old together.
One of the more puzzling pieces was “Box of Stars,” which included a clown performance by Kindryn Durantt. The plot left some ambiguity regarding the characters’ fates, whether they were deceased, dying, or intruders living in the basement.
“Sober” presented an intriguing alternate universe where alcohol has no effect on patrons, leading them to seek ways to recreate the sensations associated with drinking. Ultimately, this play conveyed themes of friendship and camaraderie found within pub culture.
Overall, the performances were engaging, thanks to the talented ensemble cast of Force of Nature, which included Monica Azcárate, Rebekah Brandes, Nicole Craig, Kindryn Durantt, Kyle Felts, Carlos Gomez, Aja Janay, Ian H. Mark, Lisa Blake Mitchell, Michelle Miyamoto-Galván, Ignacio Navarro, Annegret Steioff, and Heather Vazquez. The production was directed by Corey Chappell, Randy Marquis, and Richard Van Slyke.
