Meet Maggie Williams: International Model & Runway Coach

0

As a petite model, Maggie Williams is challenging industry norms and seeks to empower other models by providing mentorship, coaching, and inspiration. Originally from Yorktown, Virginia, Williams has walked in international runway shows in Paris and Milan and has participated in New York Fashion Week and Miami Swim Week. She has also been featured in publications such as Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, and Marie Claire. Getting her initial break into modeling while in college, Williams worked part time as a bridal consultant then transitioned into modeling bridal gowns. This eventually propelled her into the modeling industry fulltime where she continues to use her platform to inspire other petite models while also working part time as an overnight labor and delivery nurse. It should be noted that Williams also has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from James Madison University.

Currently pursuing a modeling career fulltime, Williams has experienced challenges but has managed to overcome them. As a petite model, her outlook offers a unique and refreshing perspective on the industry. Elaborating further, Williams offers insight,  “So, I’m considered a petite model meaning I stand under 5 ‘9 and I never thought runway could be an option for me. Then one day I heard of an opportunity to model at a local swimwear event,  and I showed up to the event regardless knowing I wasn’t selected yet as a model,” Williams said. Adding, “I had worn a swimsuit with zero shame, and designers took notice and had me start modeling for them that day. I was then signing a press release by the end of the day to grant rights to the production company. That honestly started my swimwear career.”

After this, Williams transitioned to other modeling gigs such as New York Fashion Week which led her to internationally modeling as well. Her success and passion also paves the way for other petite models looking to break into the industry. Elaborating further on industry standards Williams opens up, “Traditionally speaking, runway models are 5′ 9 and up. If you’re a petite model, meaning you stand under 5 ‘9 , it’s a lot easier to get involved with commercial work and shooting on set as there’s still opportunities there. But to be very honest, what I found in all of modeling is the taller you are the more bookings you get. It’s just kind of how it goes. The modeling industry is also a very gate-kept industry,” she explained.

Williams also admits there are many sacrifices that come into play in the industry such as the basics as staying physically healthy but also mentally healthy due to rejection.  “You’re getting told no left and right,” she said. Adding, “And you have to take everything with a grain of salt and figure out what you can do better to move on to the next casting or event. In general, all successful models have some sort of a backbone in order to keep going.” She also notes that keeping a positive mindset, networking, and seeking out new opportunities is essential when moving forward.

At present, Williams also provides mentorship to other aspiring and established models, “I work as a model coach virtually and in person, and teach all levels of modeling.” she said. Adding, “I’m also in the process of creating a platform for models and fashion industry professionals.”

Words of advice to others? “I think at the end of the day, the good people are always going to come out on top. Staying true to yourself is also key and not conforming to the toxic stereotypical industry mold. Even if it takes you longer to get to your destination or your goals right away don’t cheat the system and don’t be afraid to be different.”
