Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 9/32/25 – Jon Allen, the versatile actor, comedian, and independent wrestler best known to fans as the voice of Mr. Poopy Butthole on Rick and Morty, sat down with The Hollywood Times to discuss his latest projects, career journey, and what’s next on his horizon.

Allen’s upcoming film, originally titled For Rent, has been renamed Extra Toppings. The indie comedy will make its world premiere at the San Diego 48-Hour Film Festival on September 9th at AMC Mission Valley.

Without giving too much away, Allen teased that the new title came about in the editing process, adding with a smile: “Explaining why we changed the title would spoil the fun—you’ll just have to watch it play out.”

In the film, Allen plays Grant, a smart-aleck coworker who prods others to share their worst work-related stories. The film’s comedy unfolds in a setting familiar to anyone who has ever worked in an office. Allen shared that one of his favorite moments on set involved a wild improvisation with April Paje and a prop, a memory he still laughs about.

While audiences may know him for his distinct voice work, Allen is equally at home on camera. He opened up about the differences between the two worlds: “With on-camera work, there are so many variables—lighting, blocking, costumes. It can be stressful, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Behind the mic, it’s just you and the performance. Both challenge me in different ways.”

Allen’s path into voice acting started around 2000–2001, when a chance opportunity at Funimation Productions in Fort Worth, Texas, gave him his first shot. Since then, he has built a career defined by versatility. His advice to aspiring voice actors? “Follow your passion but also have a backup plan. And study all forms of acting—not just voice. The more versatile you are, the more opportunities you’ll find.”

Of course, no conversation with Allen would be complete without mentioning Rick and Morty. Taking over the role of the eccentric, fan-favorite character Mr. Poopy Butthole was both a challenge and a joy.

Rick and Morty Season 7 introduces Mr. Poopy Butthole’s new voice actor after Justin Roiland’s firing.

He described the audition process and what it’s been like working under series creator Dan Harmon: “Mr. Poopy Butthole is such a bizarre character, but that’s why fans love him. It’s about capturing that energy while still making him my own.”

Allen hinted at what fans can expect in Season 8, which debuts September 1 on Adult Swim before heading to HBO Max and Hulu. Without giving spoilers, he pointed to exciting developments with Jerry’s character and new dimensions in Beth’s storyline.

When asked about dream roles, Allen mentioned interest in tackling something within the Transformers universe, while also keeping the door open for more comedic and dramatic work.

For now, his attention is on Extra Toppings and continuing to delight audiences as Mr. Poopy Butthole. “I’ve been really lucky,” he reflected. “Whether it’s behind a mic, in front of a camera, or in a wrestling ring, I just love performing.”
