It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ruth Anne Elwell (née Sweeney), beloved co-founder and original proprietor of Ye Olde King’s Head, who passed peacefully on January 6, 2026, in Rancho Mirage, California, following a short illness.
Ruth, alongside her husband Philip Elwell, opened Ye Olde King’s Head in 1974 with a simple but powerful dream: to create a welcoming place where people could gather, feel at home, and build community. What began as a vision became a landmark — a place rich with warmth, tradition, laughter, and shared stories across generations.
Ruth was the heart of Ye Olde King’s Head. Her kindness, grace, and unwavering dedication helped shape the spirit of the establishment and the community that grew around it. To many, she was more than an owner — she was a friend, a listener, and a steady presence who made everyone feel welcome the moment they walked through the door.

She is survived by her devoted husband Philip, who is heartbroken by her passing, and by the countless patrons, friends, and extended family who were touched by her life and generosity.
Ruth’s legacy lives on in every shared meal, every conversation over a pint, and every moment of connection that Ye Olde King’s Head continues to foster — just as she and Phil always intended.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Rest in Eternal Peace, Ruth.
