Immigrant Day of Resilience

0

On April 16th was National Immigrant Day of Resilience, a day that honors the strength of immigrant communities while also naming the conditions that make that resilience necessary.

Here in San Diego, those conditions are not abstract. We are hearing about people avoiding hospitals, missing work, and staying home because it does not feel safe to be out in public. That reality is shaping how members of our LGBTQ+ community move through their daily lives.

Resilience is powerful. It should not be required just to exist safely. Too often, resilience is demanded where justice is denied.

At San Diego Pride, this reality is integrated in our work across our pillars of justice. Through Latine PrideQAPIMEDA, and other community programming, as well as through the artists and storytellers we platform, we are creating spaces where people can show up fully in all of who they are, including at the intersection of queerness and immigration.

That also means taking responsibility for the safety and accessibility of those spaces, especially now.

We invite the community to move with intention, listen to and learn from those closest to the issue, and support organizations doing this work on the ground. We want to recognize the volunteers, leaders, and community members who have built and sustained this work long before us. Our role is to support, resource, and continue creating space where people feel seen, safe, and able to participate in safety and belonging. That is Pride’s commitment, and it shapes how we lead every day.

The LGBTQ+ Agenda

The conditions of LGBTQIA+ residents in our region are deteriorating but here’s how you can help spread the LGBTQIA+ agenda and stay up to date on what is happening. All of us have a role to play and step by step, we are building the resilience of our people.

For our Nation’s LGBTQIA+ people

Following the Supreme Court’s decision on Chiles v. Salazar, the viability of lawsuits challenging Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy and state laws similar to it has increased. However, the laws banning conversion therapy remains in place for now in Colorado and other states.

Send a letter to your congressperson here to encourage them to protect LGBTQ+ folks across the country from these dangerous practices!

For the City of San Diego

Take a minute to submit your support for a comprehensive city budget that serves our people.

We’re asking SD City Council members to support smart, common-sense solutions that treat our problems, not delay them. Funding our libraries, parks, and affordable housing are critical to LGBTQIA+ public safety.

For the State of California

San Diego Pride has joined a coalition of LGBTQ+, health care and civil rights organizations urging state leaders to approve a $26 million one-time General Fund investment to protect access to medically necessary health care for transgender, gender-expansive and intersex (TGI) Californians.

Send a letter to CA Budget Committee members here to protect access to gender-affirming care

For the County of San Diego

We want to celebrate wins as well. This past month the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted to allocate $3.2 million over two years to preserve LGBTQIA-affirming adult housing services throughout our region. Thank you to the San Diego LGBT Center, Trans Family Support Services and the North County LGBTQ Resource Center for your hard work on this initiative!
