Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 7/2/25 – This indie short film holds a mirror up to a generation navigating shallow, fleeting relationships in search of emotional connection and intimacy—no matter how artificial.

Comedian and actress Esther Povitsky stars as a fictionalized version of herself, much like her role in Alone Together (2018). Armed with little more than relentless optimism and a Nicki Minaj shower curtain, Esther does her best to navigate the financial and romantic challenges of life in Los Angeles. Though she’s often met with romantic partners who are emotionally distant or indifferent, those who truly care for her don’t hold back—offering raw, unfiltered feedback whether she’s ready for it or not.

One such moment comes through a brutally honest conversation with a close friend who observes the toxicity in Esther’s relationship and feels compelled to speak up. This kind of emotional realness—sometimes awkward, always necessary—captures the film’s emotional heartbeat. Moments like these remind viewers that, at one point or another, we’ve all been each of these characters: the optimist, the cynic, the bystander, the struggler.

While the film centers on Esther’s hapless journey, a deeper theme emerges: the inevitability of personal growth on one’s own timeline. The ending appears to symbolize her willingness to take chances without the comfort of certainty—suggesting that for some, especially Los Angeles transplants like Esther, a little bit of courage and self-trust goes a long way.

I Want to Feel Fun premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 13, 2025.
