Mission Viejo, CA (The Hollywood Times) 8/17/25 – More than 300 members, friends, and allies of the Human Rights Campaign gathered on Sunday, August 17, for the annual Orange County & Long Beach Garden Party & Auction. The 2025 event, held at the Mission Viejo Country Club from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., combined connection, reflection, and action in support of LGBTQ+ equality.

Guests enjoyed a cocktail reception, light snacks, and a silent auction that helped raise funds for HRC’s mission. While some noted the absence of a hosted bar this year, the atmosphere was lively and focused, with many attendees deeply engaged in conversation about the challenges and opportunities ahead for the movement.

One of the most powerful moments of the afternoon came from Jody Van Zanten, Orange County / Long Beach Steering Committee and a parent of a transgender young adult and HRC Federal Club member. She spoke candidly about the journey of raising a trans child:

“I’ve been traveling this path since they were a youth. It’s been hard. But look around this room. Look at all these amazing people who are in this together, and the community we are building,” she said.

Benzantin then introduced Shahs of Sunset star Reza Farahan, who was honored with the Visibility Award. Praising his openness and courage, she noted, “At a time when LGBTQ+ representation in Middle Eastern and Muslim communities was nearly invisible in mainstream media, Reza chose visibility. He shattered stereotypes and made space for honest conversations about identity, culture, and acceptance.”

“I grew up as an Asian American at a time when there were not a lot of Asian Americans. Because of those experiences, I always want to take the side of the marginalized, those who are under attack.”

Farahan, warmly received by the crowd, acknowledged the honor: “Now I’m proud to be here… thank you for having me,” he said, underscoring how visibility itself remains a powerful act of resistance and hope.

Milano speaking with Brandon Wolf

HRC National Press Secretary Brandon Wolf addressed the audience about the urgency of today’s political moment. “Leaders, directors, and diversity in the city provide an image of privilege for each,” he remarked, urging supporters to remain steadfast in defending protections for marginalized communities.

He cautioned that LGBTQ+ rights remain under siege. “If we think the attacks on the marginalized will stop at the T, I will tell you to look at the history books. What is happening right now across this country is a full-scale assault on the rights and liberties of all of us. We have an obligation to stand up and fight back in every way we know how.”

The silent auction drew plenty of attention, with items ranging from wine baskets to travel packages. Among the highlights was a two-night San Diego hotel stay with breakfast, which I was fortunate to win as the highest bidder.

Closing the afternoon, HRC Orange County Board of Governors member reminded guests that membership and volunteerism are the backbone of the organization: “Our club membership is really the backbone of this organization and helps us continue fighting for equality. In any capacity you could help us, whether it’s on our committee or at events like this, we just really appreciate it.”

As attendees departed, many carried more than just their auction prizes. The afternoon left the community with renewed resolve to face ongoing challenges together, with one host summing up the day’s spirit simply: “Thank you for being here.”
