The entertainment world is reeling tonight following the tragic deaths of legendary actor and director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. On Sunday, Dec. 14 at about 3:30 p.m., authorities were called to the couple’s Brentwood home, where first responders discovered both Reiner and Michele dead at the scene. Nick Reiner is implicated in the deaths of his parents.  Nick has faced personal struggles with drug addiction, which has been a significant part of his life story. And according to multiple sources said to PEOPLE, the couple were killed by their son, Nick in what law enforcement sources are describing as a catastrophic family tragedy. (investigation still pending)

Nick Reiner is the son of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. For many years, he has spoken publicly about his long and difficult struggle with substance addiction, describing a battle that began in his early teens and followed him into adulthood.

In past interviews, Nick shared that his addiction took hold during adolescence and led to repeated stints in rehabilitation beginning around age 15. At various points, he experienced homelessness, living on the streets in multiple states as his addiction escalated. His personal journey later became the creative inspiration for the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote and which explored the realities of addiction, recovery, and fractured family relationships.

Reiner was widely known for his landmark body of work that reshaped American television and film. His passing comes just days before his scheduled appearance at Palm Springs Speaks Season Seven, presented by the Friends of the Palm Springs Library, where he was set to appear in conversation with longtime arts and entertainment journalist Bruce Fessier on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. Tickets were still available online and at the Plaza Theatre box office prior to this tragedy.

“I can’t believe we were about to sit down with him,” said Fessier in a brief statement to local press. “Rob was a towering talent, generous, insightful, and genuinely funny. We’re heartbroken.”

Rob Reiner first became famous for his role as Mike “Meathead” Stivic on the Norman Lear sitcom All in the Family, earning two Emmy Awards for his work. Most recently, Reiner directed Spinal Tap II: The End Continues in 2025.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., in 1947, Reiner was the son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner and actress/singer Estelle Lebost. His life in entertainment was both deep and expansive, shaped by family roots in Hollywood and a creative curiosity that sustained his prolific career.

Beyond entertainment, Reiner was a passionate activist and community leader. He championed public health initiatives in California and co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which played a key role in advancing marriage equality nationwide.

Michele Singer Reiner was not only Rob’s wife but also a respected photographer and creative partner in many of his endeavors. The couple married in 1989 and shared a life together that included raising three children. Together, they supported artistic and philanthropic causes and were a fixture in Hollywood and beyond.
