A myriad of people relates to the phrase, “Grief is love with no place to go” in reference to what it feels like when we lose someone in our lives. Director Grant Garry states, “I think there are so many elements of love that coincide with grief. That love is still alive in us, and it doesn’t have anywhere to go because that person, that place, or that thing is no longer a part of our lives and that’s what we struggle with.” A complex and extremely visceral phenomenon, grief through the lens of this documentary begs viewers to meet people that are going through grief exactly where they are in the tormenting, and messy process while we try and have a shred of faith that time will indeed heal all.

“Nothing prepares you for such a subjective experience” proclaims Grant regarding society growing comfortable with the concept of grief. Though so many individuals face loss, when it happens to us or people we love it can feel like a supremely foreign experience. “With me in my personal life, when grief has come up, it’s not less painful because I have gone through grief before, however, I understand that what I am experiencing is okay. I had an awareness of how I may feel. So when grief happened, I knew I would feel certain ways and I was able to question how to allow space for the grief when I was in it.”
