Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Is a Spanish-language short film written and directed by Juan Pablo Villavicencio Borges. The film centers on three high school students. They get into a fight, and although the two blamed for it aren’t responsible, the reasons behind the conflict become clear, and the consequences reveal something far deeper than a simple argument.
The film opens with a kid getting punched, then two of the three students end up in the principal’s office. Although both kids in the office have bloody noses, the principal is clearly upset with them for who they are. The two kids are being bullied, and the kid who punched them was suspended; however, the two are being blamed and told pretty much that they asked for it, and if they continue to show affection to one another at school, she has no choice but to expel them.
This is a very powerful film, especially for Latin America and Spanish-speaking countries where masculinity is far more fragile than the fragile masculinity here in the United States; after all, we refer to the frail masculinity in a gender issue as machismo for a reason: to be a man is to be macho, and to be any less is simply not allowed.
The film reveals the insidious nature of the systematic oppression these boys are facing, for the system is what’s broken and not their identities. This film is not about bullies; it’s about gender roles and fragility and homophobia and how deep it’s rooted in the systems in Spanish-language countries. I had the pleasure of watching a screening of Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! At Day Two of the Hollywood Queer Short Film Festival today, on October 3rd, in the To Be Young Again block.
