Palm Springs, CA (The Hollywood Times) 9/19/25 – As proud media partners, we were on hand for the opening night of Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs LGBTQ+ Film Festival, where audiences were treated to the stirring Croatian feature Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day (2h 17m).

Set in 1950s Yugoslavia, the film follows four close friends—renowned filmmakers whose sexual orientation places them under the microscope of a suspicious political regime. When a Communist Party loyalist is dispatched to infiltrate and sabotage their circle, their artistic pursuits and personal freedoms spiral into a harrowing struggle for survival.

Director, Ivan Juka, crafts a sweeping period drama that balances moments of intimate camaraderie with an escalating sense of dread. The film paints a vivid picture of both the flourishing creativity of its protagonists and the relentless political machinery determined to silence them.

Already selected as Croatia’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards, the film set a powerful tone for this year’s Cinema Diverse. Its placement on opening night underscored the festival’s mission to highlight global queer stories that resonate across borders and generations.

Audience members responded with a mix of awe and reflection, many noting the uncanny parallels between the film’s themes of repression and the modern-day battles for visibility and freedom faced by LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

As Cinema Diverse 2025 launches into its full program of international shorts, features, and panels, Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day stands as a striking reminder of the stakes when art, politics, and identity collide.
