Hollywood, CA (The Hollywood Times) 9/27/26 – Sunday Lunch is one of those short films that takes an uncomfortable family moment and finds just the right amount of humor in it.
Grace brings her girlfriend, Ellie, to Sunday lunch with one goal: finally telling her devout Catholic family the truth about their relationship. Of course, nothing goes according to plan. Every time Grace gets close to saying what she came to say, another family distraction gets in the way.
What I enjoyed most about Sunday Lunch is that underneath all the comedy and craziness is something very real. Coming out to the people you love can still be frightening, even when you suspect they may already know.
The film moves quickly, gets plenty of laughs and never loses the heart of Grace and Ellie’s relationship. The family dynamics are exaggerated for comedy, but anyone who has ever sat through a slightly dysfunctional family meal will recognize at least a little bit of their own family at that table.
Funny, sweet and wonderfully queer, Sunday Lunch reminds us that sometimes the biggest family secret really isn’t much of a secret at all.
