The Dynasty was a hit previously with its last subject, the New England Patriots during the Tom Brady and Bill Belichick era. This time, the documentary series features an even more legendary program. This time, the Dynasty covers the amazing women’s basketball program from the University of Connecticut. Under Coach Geno Auriemma, the UConn women’s basketball team has won 12 championships, 19 undefeated conference seasons (including eight consecutive), and six perfect seasons.
The series offers a tense but transparent look at the most successful college basketball program in the country. In an interview, Coach Geno admits that there were no attempts to control how the documentary was edited. What resulted is how building a dynasty of this caliber doesn’t come without sacrifice. Coach Geno doesn’t hold back his feelings, and neither do his former players.
While the players admit that Coach Geno’s methods were particularly hard, there was a method to his madness, so to speak. He didn’t drill his players like they were women…he drilled them like they were basketball players. One of the amazing parts of the documentary is how the filmmakers are able to really show, in interviews with past players, the pain and sacrifice that they went through under Coach Geno.
The first episode of this documentary was proof of that when we saw the interviews with one of the first stars of Coach Geno’s program: Rebecca Lobo. From Lobo’s own words, the coach was hard on her, but it seemed to follow a pattern. That seemed to be what Coach Geno did for all his star players. Not just Lobo, but also Diana Taurasi and Paige Bueckers among others. Many former Huskies players shared similar stories in later episodes.
We also get a good look into the psyche of Coach Geno himself. Everything is put into this documentary from Coach Geno’s fears of failing to how he was inspired by the “Triangle Offense” that Coach Phil Jackson used with the Chicago Bulls that he later brought to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The biggest test of Coach Geno’s career as a coach was shown in the first season of the documentary when it came time to face the juggernaut of the time: the women’s basketball team from the University of Tennessee. The coach at the time was the only other coach in college women’s basketball whose legend is as great as Coach Geno’s: Coach Pat Summit.
As the documentary and any good sports writer will tell you (myself included), Pat Summit was just as much of a legend as Coach Geno. The interviews with some of Coach Geno’s assistant coaches also confirm that Coach Pat’s Lady Volunteers of Tennessee was the early benchmark to clear for the UConn women Huskies.

This documentary is a roller coaster ride of emotions. Coach Geno was right when I interviewed him: no one holds back. The filmmakers themselves admitted they didn’t know nearly as much about this program before pre-production. This mini-series is the perfect road map to show the struggles that face women’s basketball even today.
Don’t take my word for it. The best way to truly appreciate and believe what it takes to create a program that has produced many of the WNBA’s best stars is to watch for yourself. Be prepared to cry, go in with an open mind, and prepare yourselves to get a real look at what it truly means to be a champion.
