My friend Michael and I stayed in the Sand Cabin, a spacious and comfortable oasis that will accommodate families of six or more. Members of every generation and all ages luxuriate in the amazing views (a field full of horses, mountains!), the private hot tub on the front porch, the well-equipped kitchen, and the cozy beds in which to snooze after a busy day amongst nature. AAA four-diamond amenities meet Western hospitality and charm, and the result is stunning.
The cabin accommodations are each unique, and there’s also the option of private rooms in the Main Lodge, close to the Great Room in which the meals are served.
A shuttle driver from the ranch picks visitors up at the Yampa Valley Airport for the scenic transport to Vista Verde, which is just north of Steamboat Springs, in a place called Clark, and the return trip is also covered.
The cuisine is incredibly good (my friend and I ate quail for the first time, and it was amazing!), the staff is outgoing and exuberant, and activities abound whether it be winter, autumn, or summer.
Even for those who have never climbed atop a horse, there is instruction and riding. My friend and I went out in a group on horseback and helped to herd cattle, which was a unique and magical experience. Michael had never before ridden a horse, but the expert instructors and lessons made him feel confident enough to get in the saddle and take off across the open fields.
A horse-riding clinic, trail rides, hikes, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, ice fishing, snowshoeing, skiing, snowboarding, archery, fly fishing, swimming, yoga, paddle boarding, fat-tire biking, massage, night life, activities for kids and teens. . . the fun goes on and on.
The kids’ programs are broken down into Tots (ages three to pre-K), Kid (K-fifth grade), Tween (middle school; grades six to eight), and Teen (ages 14-17), with afternoons free for family time, rest, and recharge.
