Palm Springs, CA (The Hollywood Times) 2/23/26 – Palm Springs is mourning the loss of a man whose generosity quietly shaped the heart of our community.
John McDonald passed away peacefully on February 22 at the age of 93. A devoted philanthropist and community leader, John’s life was defined not by recognition, but by service, particularly to the LGBTQ+ community he loved and believed in so deeply.
In 2015, John and his husband, Rob Wright, made an extraordinary gift to The LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert: a 10,000-square-foot building on North Palm Canyon Drive that dramatically expanded the organization’s reach. Now known as the McDonald/Wright Building, the space has become a hub for connection, support services, behavioral health care, technology access, and community gatherings.
Because of that gift, thousands have found resources, refuge, and belonging within its walls.
Their commitment to equality extended well beyond the Coachella Valley. John and Rob supported LGBTQ+ initiatives throughout California, helping fund programs in legal scholarship and community services that continue to advance rights and visibility statewide. Their philanthropy was thoughtful and forward-looking, designed to create lasting infrastructure, not just momentary recognition.
In 2019, the couple was honored with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of the Stars, placed in front of The Center’s building that bears their names, a fitting tribute to two individuals whose impact is permanently woven into the fabric of the city.
In 2024, they were presented with The Center’s Legacy Award, recognizing decades of steadfast advocacy and generosity.
I had the privilege of interviewing John and Rob together at The Center Stage Gala in October 2024. What stood out most was John’s gentle presence. He spoke thoughtfully, listened intently, and radiated a sincere belief that community matters. There was no ego in him, only gratitude and a deep desire to give back.
John McDonald leaves behind more than buildings and honors. He leaves a living legacy, one measured in lives supported, futures strengthened, and a community empowered to stand taller.
Our heartfelt condolences go to Rob, their loved ones, and all who were touched by John’s kindness.
His generosity will continue to ripple through Palm Springs and beyond for generations to come. 🤍
