A Visit to The Shag House at Modernism Week Fall 2025

Palm Springs, CA (The Hollywood Times) 10/18/2026,
Now that fall has returned to Palm Springs, Modernism Week is once again drawing design enthusiasts and curious visitors to the desert. Among the many featured stops this season, one stands out as more of an experience than a model home: The Shag House.

Tucked in the Little Beverly Hills neighborhood, The Shag House began as a 1958 mid-century modern tract home designed by Palmer & Krisel for the Alexander Construction Company. Today, it has been transformed into a living artwork by renowned pop-modern artist Josh Agle—better known as Shag—along with homeowner Brandon McBurney. Together, they have created a space that celebrates the optimism, playfulness, and bold color of Palm Springs’ mid-century era without slipping into nostalgia.

During Modernism Week Fall 2025, visitors are invited to step inside this reimagined icon. We were fortunate to join a private tour led by McBurney himself, alongside Shag and Gilbert, who manages many of the project’s design details. Their combined storytelling brings the home to life, revealing the careful thought behind every shade of turquoise, the choice of artwork, and even the poolside bar that builders once insisted couldn’t be done.
When a design idea came up that stretched beyond the original budget, Shag brought it to Brandon, who took one look and said, “We have to do it.” The vision was too good to turn down, and the budget was expanded. Today, visitors get to enjoy the impressive results.
The Shag House feels like walking through one of the artist’s paintings. Each room evokes the joy and eccentric confidence of the mid-century lifestyle that first defined Palm Springs: cocktail hour at sunset, music spilling into the backyard.

The home is also available for private rentals, photo shoots, and curated experiences, continuing its purpose as a gathering place for art and expression. Those interested in hosting or visiting can learn more at TheShagHouse.com.
