Hollywood, CA (The Hollywood Times) 8/12/24 – Japan House, nestled like a lighthouse within Hollywood’s Ovation Hollywood Shopping Mall, serves as a vibrant cultural conduit. Overlooking a diverse array of businesses and eateries—including 70 shops and 25 restaurants, as well as iconic venues like TCL Chinese Theatres and Hard Rock Cafe—it draws curious tourists and Japanese culture enthusiasts. On August 11, 2024, it hosted a Q&A on diversity featuring disabled performers from The Easter Seals Disability Challenge 2024, part of The HollyShorts Film Festival’s 20th Anniversary celebration.

Nic Novicki, actor and founder of The Easter Seals Disability Challenge, recently celebrated the 11th anniversary of his initiative. As a special highlight, he integrated his EDFC2024 members into the HollyShorts presentation event, moderated by CNN’s David Daniel, a senior producer and broadcast journalist.

The event, titled “Casting Authentically: Conversation and Reception,” featured a distinguished panel of casting directors: April Webster (Star Wars, Star Trek), Jenny Jue (Inglourious Basterds, Snowpiercer), Steven Tylor O’Connor (Best Foot Forward, The Healing Powers of Dude), and Sydny Gonzales (This Is Us, Lopez vs. Lopez). They discussed opportunities, auditioning tips, and highlighted the often-overlooked disabled voiceover talent pool.

Following the insightful discussion, attendees—including actors, voice-over artists, and writers—enjoyed wine and bagels. Nic Novicki, a “little person,” expressed gratitude to everyone for their participation and support of the Easter Seals Film Festivals. Many attendees had participated in at least five of these festivals, showcasing a strong commitment to inclusivity within the disabled community.
