Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 8/28/24 – Pink Icon Kitten Kay Sera, a familiar face at the LA Pride and WeHo Pride parades, is back in the spotlight, but this time with a groundbreaking mission. Her band, Pinktastic Plastixx, is set to celebrate National All-Girl Bands Day with a concert on August 27, aiming to shine a light on female musicians who often get overlooked in the music industry.
Sera’s journey with Pinktastic Plastixx is a testament to perseverance and passion. Reflecting on a recent nostalgic visit to the Whiskey A Go-Go, Sera shared, “The Whiskey Go-Go last night! Hard to believe it’s been over 30 years ago stepping into this place on the very famous Sunset Strip! It is still a dive, and the sound system has not improved! But regardless, it was very nostalgic of the ‘80s / ‘90s. Thank you, Val, for the nostalgic mems!” said Dana Hass.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Times, Sera, along with bandmates Celinda Chang and Alexa Rae, revealed their journey from aspirations to reality. Initially envisioned as a pop solo artist, Sera longed for the camaraderie of a full band. “I did the whole singing to a track thing, but it gets lonely,” she confessed. “I always dreamed of being in an all-girl band, but I honestly didn’t think it was possible.”

Sera’s quest for bandmates started with an open Craigslist ad, only to face significant ageist and sexist backlash. Undeterred, she turned to Instagram, leveraging hashtags like #femaledrummer and #femalebassplayer to find her bandmates. Drummer Rae was the first to join, followed by the others through a “casting call” process, bringing Pinktastic Plastixx to life.
With their collective talent, Pinktastic Plastixx is more than just a novelty act; they’re a serious band with a mission. Their upcoming National All-Girl Bands Day on August 27 is not only a celebration but a statement. The event will feature performances by four all-girl bands: The Anti Groupies, Turning Jane, Plush, and of course, Pinktastic Plastixx. The evening will also include awards for the performing bands and for iconic all-girl bands like The Go-Go’s. The event will be hosted by Los Angeles Magazine senior editor Lina Lecaro, a respected figure in the music scene.
Sera expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “We are thrilled and honored to have Lina as our host because she is such a bad-ass female music aficionado who really loves what she does – and it shows!”
Pinktastic Plastixx’s ambition doesn’t end with a single event. Sera envisions a national tour exclusively featuring all-girl bands, tentatively named “Girlchella,” highlighting the underrepresentation of women in major music festivals. “It’s shocking… however, females only make up 20% of all the music festivals. It is totally male dominated…and girls wanna rock too!”
