The Hollywood Times had the opportunity to talk with Jennifer Brooks about her rescue organization and the rescue of 92 dogs in Mississippi. Here is our conversation:

NYC Second Chance Rescue has been moved to action by an alarming case originating in Mississippi. 92 dogs were being abused and hoarded. This is, by far, one of the most abusive cases that the Charity has ever seen.
When the images flooded their inbox, Jennifer Brooks, President of NYC Second Chance Rescue, immediately took a flight to Mississippi to see the situation first-hand.
When she arrived, 92 dogs were locked behind makeshift kennels with chains wrapped around their necks, prisoners suffering and living in the most inhumane conditions.
“The sights, smells, and sounds will stay with me long after we shut down this horrid place. 92 dogs are being severely abused and neglected; they lay helpless in filth; sleeping in feces and urine that has caked into their fur and is rotting away at their skin.
As you walk through the property, the cries for help are ear-piercing, dead rats cover the ground and snakes slither out of the lake to bite the dogs. This is hell on earth – there is no other way to describe it. As I cradled their depressed faces in my hands; I made them a promise and I have to keep that promise; I have to get them out” said NYC Second Chance Rescue President, Jennifer Brooks
Josie Jones of the Lake Hartwell Veterinary Clinic graphically described the harrowing conditions the animals had been experiencing, “Countless dogs were chained with logging chains around their necks. All clearly had minimal contact or mental stimulation. Rats could be seen crawling under the pallets and tin laid on the ground. The number of flies was shocking. The kennels that were not baking in direct sunlight were swamps of mud, urine & feces. All of the dogs had bloody ears and noses from the constant fly bites and most would yelp in pain when you touched their ears. Many have teeth ground down to the gums from chewing at the chains and cages.”
Volunteers arrived at the property over 48 hours ago to start triaging. All 92 dogs on the property are now fully vaccinated from infectious diseases, thanks to our veterinary partners.
In the three weeks since the NYC Second Chance Rescue arrived in Mississippi to rescue the “Mississippi 92”. All 92 dogs have been removed from the property.

However, Over 30 dogs still need placement; they are at boarding facilities and need rescue commitment. Although many have been have taken in, the charity cannot do this alone.
Together, we can provide a second chance for every one of these wonderful dogs and Together, we can rewrite their stories.
